90 Day Fiancé: Before the 90 Days star, Ben Rathbun said a lot about his relationship with his ex-wife Lisa in his 10 pages of text messages to Mahogany Roca during their Huacachina trip. The 52-year-old met Mahogany, 22, online when she sent him a friend request after being enamored by his modeling pics. However, Ben didn’t ask why Mahogany had so many filters on her own selfies; neither did he wonder why she always refused to get on video calls with him. Ben made up his mind to make Mahogany his wife as per God’s wish, but when fans met the real Mahogany in Peru, she claimed she didn’t even think of Ben as her boyfriend.

Before committing to him on 90 Day Fiancé, Mahogany grilled Ben about why his past relationships with his ex-wife and 27-year-old fiancé had failed during a romantic dessert dinner date. Upon seeing how Ben kept blaming the two women for things not having worked out between them, Mahogany called him “immature” and “strange.” In her confessional, Mahogany revealed to producers that she’s worried Ben isn’t the person she thought he was. That night, Ben tried to clear things up with Mahogany by sending her multiple long texts. An uncomfortable and upset Mahogany chose to ignore Ben’s messages and wanted to talk to him face to face. His messages said things such as, “My love for you grows stronger every day, but it seems that God has hardened your heart towards me.” Ben, who was arrested, wrote, “You fear who I am and my intentions. But there is no room in love for that. Therefore this is not love. But know this — I do love you. I always will,” which the show translated from Spanish to English.

Nonetheless, several other messages from Ben about his relationship with his ex-wife also flashed rapidly on screen, which some fans managed to decode. According to CheatSheet, a 90 Day Fiancé fan on Reddit, who goes by Worldly_Armadillo300, helped fellow viewers out by posting what Ben said about his marriage and wild statements such as, “now I’m eating my food just trying not to cry.” The Michigan Lupus Foundation director, Ben, answered the question of whether he has a good relationship with his ex-wife. He said, “I have completely forgiven her and treated her incredibly well […] yet for her part she hasn’t forgiven me yet and she still has some feelings about divorce. There was no love in marriage but she had it good so she didn’t want it to end.

According to Ben, he took care of his first wife financially, “including the paying more than was necessary for the maintenance of the children.” Ben claimed he gave his ex-wife the house and “everything in the house” after their divorce following 24 years of marriage. The texts seemed to have Ben revealing he paid the ex-wife half of his salary during the first few years of the divorce. “This is my truth before God. You can choose not to believe me, or to believe me, or to judge and wait. I respect everything you do because you’re an incredibly smart woman with pious wisdom. You don’t need me and you could have anyone, and I don’t need you for happiness because God alone gives that,” he continued. Ben also justified him pursuing Mahogany by explaining he wants to “chase” her because God has put her in his “heart.” One of the eerie messages also read, “I like every little thing about you, so if God is doing this, nothing will separate us.”

During his 90 Day Fiancé introduction, Ben had spoken about growing up in a religious cult that controlled him and his family. He grew up to become a pastor and married his church’s children’s ministry partner, Lisa, and went on to have four children. The couple left the cult seven years ago to escape it, but because of their many problems, Ben and Lisa couldn’t save their marriage, and he filed for divorce. Ben shares custody of his four children with Lisa, and his eldest daughter, who’s not a part of 90 Day Fiancé: Before the 90 Days, is the same age as Mahogany. On B90 episode 6, Ben claimed he has a “cold” relationship with Lisa and that she’s not over the divorce while harboring “feelings of resentment” towards him. Ben has conveniently left these details out from his texts to Mahogany in which he apparently “poured his heart out” while also using the word “good” to describe his and Lisa’s relationship.
