J.K. Rowling has come under fire yet again for her comments on trans issues, this time for opposing a bill that would ease legal gender change. The Harry Potter author has been the subject of controversy for several years now due to her opinions on trans issues, which she first expressed in a series of anti-transgender tweets in 2020. As a self-identifying trans-exclusionary radical feminist, Rowling has frequently argued that discussing gender identity defies the concept of biological sex.
In response to Rowling expressing her controversial beliefs, several Harry Potter stars have spoken out against the creator of the Wizarding World, including all three actors who portrayed the franchise’s Golden trio – Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint. The recent Harry Potter reunion on HBO Max opted to largely ignore Rowling, save for some archival footage from 2019. The Fantastic Beasts series is also beginning to distance itself from the Harry Potter author, as a recent Secrets of Dumbledore trailer tried to hide her involvement as much as possible. Rowling has been the sole screenwriter behind the Fantastic Beasts trilogy which began in 2016.
Now, Rowling has come under fire once again for her comments on trans issues, this time for criticizing a Scottish bill that would make it easier for trans people to legally change their gender. The Harry Potter author took to Twitter to share her thoughts on Scotland’s Gender Recognition Reform Bill, claiming that the proposed law “will harm the most vulnerable women in society.” In response to Nicola Sturgeon, the First Minister of Scotland, disputing her claims, Rowling continued to express her opposition of the bill on Twitter. Read what she had to say in her posts below:
Exactly this. The law @NicolaSturgeon’s trying to pass in Scotland will harm the most vulnerable women in society: those seeking help after male violence/rape and incarcerated women. Statistics show that imprisoned women are already far more likely to have been previously abused. https://t.co/LPN8cx1Vf4

Multiple women’s groups have presented well-sourced evidence to @NicolaSturgeon’s government about the likely negative consequences of this legislation for women and girls, especially the most vulnerable. All has been ignored. If the legislation is passed 1/2

and those consequences ensue as a result, the @SNP govt can’t pretend it wasn’t warned. 2/2

Needless to say, Rowling’s recent rant on the matter has caused another round of controversy, as fans who once held the Harry Potter author dear and the public at large have harshly criticized her views, which they believe promote anti-transgender sentiments. Appearing on BBC Radio, Sturgeon was one of the first to dispute Rowling’s claim that the bill “will harm the most vulnerable in society,” arguing that its purpose to ease the process by which people can legally change their gender and not to take away rights from women, which Rowling has claimed.
This latest controversy caused by J.K. Rowling‘s public opposition of the Gender Recognition Reform Bill comes a month ahead of Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore‘s release on April 8. The movie has also been plagued by a separate scandal involving Johnny Depp, who stepped down from his role as Grindenwald. Whether or not these controversies have an effect on the movie’s box office performance or the Harry Potter brand remains to be seen.
