A Haunted House 2 - Trailer No. 1

Earlier today Open Road Films released the first trailer for A Haunted House 2, the sequel to January’s A Haunted HouseThe new installment marks the return of Marlon Wayons as Malcom, the hapless pseudo-hero from the original film, who’s moved into another haunted house with his new girlfriend (Jaime Pressly) and her two kids.

The original, which followed Wayans and Essence Atkins as Kisha, premiered in January of this year and was met with mostly negative reviews. (It currently holds a measly 10% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, though Metacritic was a bit kinder with a rating of 20 out of 100.) Despite the apparent consensus that it stunk, A Haunted House grossed nearly $60 million worldwide — impressive, considering it was filmed with a budget of only $2.5 million.

Announced in April, A Haunted House 2 also features Gabriel Iglesias and the return of Atkins and Cedric the Entertainer. Including riffs on Sinister and this year’s The Conjuring (as well as the demise of yet another of Malcom’s dogs), the film picks up a year after the events of the first movie and will employ the same Paranormal Activity-inspired found footage style it used in the original.

News of the sequel came as no surprise (except perhaps to the Rotten Tomatoes contributors who saw it), given its massive box office take, and Open Road Films CEO Tom Ortenberg wasn’t shy about how much he enjoyed working with Wayans on A Haunted House when the sequel was announced back in April:

“Marlon Wayans is one of the funniest and hardest working talents in the movie business. Working with Marlon, producer Rick Alvarez and IM Global on A Haunted House was a fantastic experience and we are thrilled to re-assemble the team for another hilarious movie.”

Full Disclosure: I saw A Haunted House on Netflix a couple months back, and while I’m fully aware it’s not a good movie, I’d be lying if I said I didn’t laugh through a good chunk of it. I have no plans to see the sequel in theaters, where people might see me, but I won’t be disappointed when I get an email from Netflix alerting me to when it’s available to stream.
