Here’s a guide to the cast and characters of beloved baseball movie A League Of Their Own. As an actress, the late Penny Marshall was best known as Laverne from classic sitcom Laverne & Shirley, but she was also a pioneering female director. She directed the likes of cult-favorite Jumpin’ Jack Flash with Whoopi Goldberg, Awakenings and Big. Not only was the latter a big – pun intended – hit worldwide, it was also the first film from a female director to gross over $100 million.

One of her most acclaimed films was 1992’s A League Of Their Own. This comedy-drama is set during World War II and charts the found of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. The movie was a critical and commercial hit upon release and is considered a sporting classic now. While it didn’t receive a movie sequel, a short-lived CBS sitcom arrived in 1993. Even with Penny Marshall directing the pilot and Tom Hanks helming another episode, the show only lasted for six episodes. A new League Of Their Own series is happening at Amazon, which will start Broad City castmates D’Arcy Carden and Abbi Jacobson, with the latter co-creating the show alongside Will Graham.

Tom Hanks – Jimmy Dugan

Tom Hanks reunited with Penny Marshall following Big for A League Of Their Own. He plays the washed-up, alcoholic manager of the Peaches. Jimmy doesn’t want to manage the team but when they start showing potential, he takes the role seriously and helps connects with his players.

Lori Petty – Kit

Tank Girl star Lori Petty plays Dottie’s sister Kit, who wants to leave her dull small-town life behind. Kit wasn’t scouted and is only allowed to tag along if she can convince her big sister to join in. She later becomes jealous of Dottie’s natural talent and joins a rival team.

Rosie O’Donnell – Doris Murphy

Rosie O’Donnell (The Flintstones) provides A League Of Their Own’s comic relief as Doris, the abrasive former bouncer covering third base; she’s also best friends with Mae.

Madonna – Mae

Singer Madonna plays ex-taxi driver Mae, who plays center field. Also known as “All The Way” Mae, she becomes something of a team celebrity. While Madonna puts in good work in the role, her casting caused Debra Winger – who was originally playing Dottie – to leave the movie, as she felt it was a publicity stunt.

Jon Lovitz – Ernie Capadino

Jon Lovitz plays Ernie in A League Of Their Own, the scout responsible for bringing the Rockford Peaches together. He saw particular potential in Dottie, which is why he insisted Kit persuade her to join up. The ever-prolific Lovitz was most recently seen on AP Bio.
