A Quiet Place Part III needs to break the franchise’s story formula. With both this sequel and a spinoff confirmed, it’s now apparent that the horror series is morphing into a franchise. For that to truly succeed, however, it’s going to need to shake things up sooner rather than later.

The first two installments of the A Quiet Place franchise have followed the Abbott family as they try to survive the onslaught of an extraterrestrial apocalypse. The first film is self-contained and focused on the character drama. The second film, while still keeping the Abbotts as a focal point (except for Quiet Place‘s Lee following his death in the first film,) expands the world substantially, introducing new characters like Cillian Murphy’s Emmett, who showed how others in the world have survived.

For the most part, A Quiet Place II was an effective sequel that didn’t detract from the first. However, its attempts to expand the world further felt a bit underdeveloped. This notion stemmed from the fact that A Quiet Place II repeated many elements and tense situations already used in the original movie. The underdeveloped reception was also prevalent with the island sequence, which appeared towards the end of the movie and didn’t get enough time to be fleshed out. The most information viewers received was through the conversation Emmett had with the leader, who explained the chaos that occurred as people tried to get on boats to reach the island. While it’s likely that the upcoming Quiet Place spin-off could cover the island’s origins, there certainly could’ve been a little more done within Part II. This is an issue that Part III cannot afford, especially when the previous film has brought the character arcs of the Abbotts to a near-satisfying conclusion.

Continuing the same formula is something Part III cannot afford to, especially when the previous film has seemingly brought the Abbotts arcs to an end. Ultimately, A Quiet Place III expanding the world of the franchise could be a great thing. However, doing it while keeping the Abbotts as a focal point could make it a harder task. There’s a risk involved in whether expanding the world will sideline the Abbotts and whether the world will feel underdeveloped if it isn’t the larger focus of the film. To some degree, A Quiet Place II proves this to be the case. The best scenario would be to have A Quiet Place III be the Abbotts’ closing chapter so that the franchise can move on to telling new stories without having to repeat previously seen concepts.

As of now, there are no details regarding what will occur in A Quiet Place III. For now, though, it’s incredibly likely that the Abbotts will return and the world continues to expand. If the franchise wishes to remain sustainable, it’ll have to use this threequel to cap off the story of its protagonist family and allow new faces to helm it. Fortunately, given the quality and success of the first two films, it’s hopeful that A Quiet Place III delivers a satisfying sendoff for the Abbotts and sets the stage for its future in such a way that keeps viewers wishing for more.
