A Quiet Place has yet to explain how its monsters ended up on Earth — but a Reddit theory believes they were sent by another species. With their quick instincts and bullet-proof exoskeletons, the creatures are the perfect killing machines. According to the theory, that’s no coincidence. It states that a completely different species sent the Quiet Place monsters to Earth in order to clear the way for themselves.

A Quiet Place Part II‘s opening scene shows the sudden moment that the aliens plummet toward Earth. Lee (John Krasinski) and Evelyn Abbott (Emily Blunt) are at their son’s baseball game. Off in the distance, they see a flaming object falling from the sky. Before they know it, alien monsters are wiping out their friends and neighbors with ruthless ferocity. As the first movie established, survivors eventually discover that the monsters are completely blind, forcing them to hunt by sound. But when they hear something, they’ll stop at nothing to destroy it.

The first two installments of the franchise are focused on the shoeless-Abbott family finding a way to destroy the creatures. At this point in the series, the characters have yet to question why the creatures landed on Earth. But discovering they were sent by another species would be the perfect segue into multiple Quiet Place spin-off movies.

The original Reddit theory points out that it doesn’t make any sense that the monsters would appear on Earth for no reason. But as they’re impervious to traditional warfare, they’re clearly designed to force humanity to drastically change their lifestyle and scatter. That way, people would be more vulnerable if a superior species swooped in to wipe out humanity. Redditor u/moviemaker2 built upon the original theory by pointing out the monsters have a “kill switch,” likely designed by their creators — their sensitivity to a high sound frequency. The creatures are powerful enough to take out humanity but, with the monsters’ weakness, their creators can disarm them when the purpose has been served.
