The Witcher star Henry Cavill says starring in a Red Dead Redemption 2 movie adaptation would be fun after having just started playing it. Developed and published by Rockstar Games, the third installment in the Red Dead series serves as a prequel to its 2010 predecessor and shifts the story’s focus to outlaw Arthur Morgan in the Western, Midwestern and Southern United States in 1899. The game sees Morgan as he struggles to deal with the decline of the Wild West and attempts to keep the Van der Linde gang alive under threats of the government, rival gangs and more.

Having languished in development for over eight years, Red Dead Redemption 2 became a smash hit upon release, scoring rave reviews from critics for its story, characters, open-world design, graphics and music, though some criticism was aimed towards the game’s over-attention to detail and realism. The title has also broken several records in the sales department, holding the current record for the second-biggest launch in the history of entertainment with over $725 million grossed in its opening weekend, and went on to win multiple Game of the Year awards. Two years on from its release and players continue to enjoy the breadth of content with Red Dead Online, including one notable face in a different area of the industry.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

While speaking with Gamereactor on the red carpet of The Witcher season 2, Henry Cavill opened up about his thoughts on adapting another video game for him to star in. Though noting he wouldn’t necessarily tie the project in with Netflix, Cavill expressed his interest in a Red Dead Redemption 2 movie, having just started playing the celebrated game. See what Cavill said below:

“Hmmm… aww, that’s a very good [question]. Well, it’s a tricky one, ’cause you’re tying both an IP and a company together, which is a tricky thing to do, so I certainly don’t want to put myself in any corners with that, but there are plenty of games out there… I’ve actually started playing Red Dead Redemption 2 -I know I’m a little bit late to that party- but I started playing it and I’m really enjoying it. And so, something like that I think would be fun to turn into a movie. [Western Cavill?] Yeah!”

Cavill is well-known for his love of tabletop and video games, having built his own gaming PC and revisited The Witcher 3 numerous times prior to working on Netflix’s adaptation of the fantasy book and game franchise. The star has even expressed an interest in entering talks for a starring role in Amazon’s series adaptation of BioWare’s Mass Effect franchise, a project still in the early stages of development as the streamer is in final talks to acquire the rights. As evidenced by his work on Netflix’s The Witcher, Cavill has certainly sought to make sure his work on any game adaptation is exactly what fans want in translating their favorite titles to the screen.

Rockstar Games remains an interesting outlier in the world of video game movie adaptations with only one of their properties having ever hit the screen in the form of the Mark Wahlberg-led Max Payne. Given the very cinematic nature of the prequel, Red Dead Redemption 2 would make for an exciting film adaptation and Cavill’s gruff and commanding screen presence makes him an ideal candidate to bring Arthur Morgan to life in live-action. In the meantime, audiences can catch up with Cavill’s latest turn as Geralt of Rivia with The Witcher season 2 now streaming on Netflix.
