What’s the most romantic movie of all time? Chances are, many will think of movies based on Nicholas Sparks novels. While audiences loved The Notebook, there’s another Nicholas Sparks film that tugs at people’s heartstrings almost two decades after its release, and that’s A Walk To Remember. The movie was a huge hit when it was released in 2002, starring Mandy Moore and Shane West as two high schoolers who couldn’t be more different but still fall deeply in love.

Mandy Moore’s role as Jamie Sullivan is a fan favorite, and she made audiences cry when she shared with Landon Carter that she’s dying of cancer. Their romance is sweet, pure and nostalgia-inducing. The movie is full of great quotes that are worth remembering all these years later.

10 “She’s the best person I’ve ever known.”

This quote is from Landon, and it’s a huge deal that he says this about Jamie because he starts the movie as a popular jerk who doesn’t care about being a good guy.

As the story progresses, Landon falls for Jamie and realizes that he was wrong all of this time. He doesn’t care about being liked or cool, and he knows that Jamie, with her curiosity about the world and desire to learn as much as she can, has forever changed him for the better.

Landon also says this great quote, which is beautiful and also a very cheesy statement — par for the course in a Nicholas Sparks movie.

After Jamie’s tragic death, Landon talks about how much she means to him and how he knows that their love will linger in the air for the rest of his life. Although they can’t physically be together, he knows that she’s still with him. This quote is just one reason why audiences cried watching the movie the first time (and all the other times, too).

8 “Your act only works on an audience.”

When Jamie says this to Landon, she’s explaining that she’s got him all figured out. She knows that he wants everyone to think that he’s the coolest guy in school, but she’s not impressed by him.

After this statement, the characters start actually talking to each other and being honest, so it’s a huge turning point in their love story.

7 “You taught me how.”

Landon’s father could be one of the worst movie dads ever. Played by David Lee Smith, he’s been totally absent from his son’s life.

When he tells Landon “Don’t walk away,” Landon responds “You taught me how.” This is great writing as that single line tells the whole story: Landon feels like his dad ignored him most of his life and it’s not something that he can forgive and forget.

6 “I’m scared of not being with you.”

Jamie tells Landon that she’s afraid that when she dies, she won’t be with him anymore, and it’s an incredibly heartbreaking moment. It’s tough for Landon to come to terms with losing the girl that he’s fallen in love with, as he knows at this point in the story that she’s the one for him.

5 “I don’t know man, I’m just tired of doing the same old s**t every day.”

Nicholas Sparks movies may be about love but A Walk To Remember touches on the changing nature of friendships, too.

When Landon’s friend Eric (Al Thompson) asks, “What’s with you, man? It’s like you don’t even have time for your real friends anymore,” Landon responds honestly. Landon is at a crossroads. While he still cares about his friends because he has known them for so long, he doesn’t like how mean they can be, especially to Jamie. Landon feels judged by them and he wants to be with Jamie. It’s hard for him to live in between these two worlds.

4 “Landon, look, I thought I saw something in you, something good, but I was very wrong.”

This is a big moment for Jamie, as this is about as cruel as she can get. When she and Landon star in a school play together, they get to know each other, and she assumes that he’ll talk to her in front of his friends.

Unfortunately, at this point in the movie, Landon is still concerned about what people will think, so he pretends not to know what she’s talking about. She explains that she’s not interested in hanging out with him anymore. This is a big moment as Landon freaks out, realizing that he could lose the girl he is falling in love with.

3 “He’s too busy looking for your brain.”

When Landon’s pal Dean (Clayne Crawford) asks Jamie, “If there is a higher power, why is it He can’t get you a new sweater?” this is Jamie’s perfect, biting response.

This is the third best quote in the movie as Jamie proves that although she’s sweet and naïve, she can fight back and stand up for herself. It’s one of the first times that Landon realizes there’s more to Jamie than he originally thought and he underestimated her.

2 “I might be bad at it.”

Some movie scenes are meant to be sweet but end up creepy and weird, and that’s definitely not the case here.

When Landon says “I might kiss you,” this is Jamie’s response, and it’s adorable. This is the second best quote in A Walk to Remember as Jamie is proving that she’s an innocent person who has never dated or fallen in love before. It shows how strong Jamie and Landon’s connection is.

1 “Right now, you’re straddling the state line. You’re in two places at once.”

Landon does so many amazing, romantic things for Jamie, trying to make the rest of her life as magical as possible. He makes her a telescope, he takes her on adorable dates, and he even proposes so they can get married before she passes away.

This is the movie’s best moment, though, and one that fans still swoon over. Jamie said that her dream was to be in two places at once, and Landon delivers, driving her to a place where she can stand on the state line. Landon is a perfect love interest and this quote proves how kind his heart is.
