In its most recent earnings call, Ubisoft told investors that Assassin’s Creed Valhalla will benefit from a “stronger” post-launch support strategy when compared to 2018’s Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. Interestingly, Ubisoft came under fire last week from disgruntled fans who believe the publisher has prioritized microtransactions, instead of rolling out valuable post-launch content and updates that fix AC Valhalla.

Much of the backlash comes from concerns about the grind required to progress and earn good gear. Players specifically took note of the nine gear sets being sold in the in-game store, the same number of sets available in AC Valhalla proper. This is especially worrisome when considering gear sets can provide stat bonuses that affect gameplay. Add to that the high price of said sets and there lies a perfect storm for building fan frustration. The game’s missteps don’t seem to have negatively impacted sales, though. AC Valhalla’s commercial success drove Ubisoft to its most profitable quarter to date, which saw the French publisher bring in $1.2 billion during last year’s holiday season.

The latest word from Ubisoft regarding AC Valhalla suggests it’s just getting started content-wise. During a recent earnings call with investors, relayed by Push Square, the publisher insisted the latest Assassin’s Creed entry will “benefit from a stronger and longer post-launch program” compared to AC Odyssey. Specifics weren’t given during at the time, but there’s plenty to glean from the statement when taking Odyssey’s post-launch offerings into consideration.

Most fans would agree the post-launch content roll out for AC Odyssey was impressive, despite a narrative misstep that Ubisoft Quebec quickly adjusted. Free and paid content were spread out over the course of several months. Players regularly received new side missions, gear, and other major updates free of charge. The paid DLC came in the form of two separate story expansions, Legacy of the First Blade and The Fate of Atlantis, each separated into three episodes.

Thus far, the free offerings in Valhalla aren’t exactly on par, with the Yule Festival update in December leading the charge on this front. New modes, additional settlement festivals, and gear should be coming as freebies this spring, however. With regards to Valhalla’s paid expansions, two are on the horizon – Wrath of the Druids and The Siege of Paris. The former is on track to arrive on an unspecified date during the spring, while The Siege of Paris should follow this summer.
