Critically acclaimed DC artist Robson Rocha has passed away at the age of 41. He passed after a battle with COVID-19. Rocha is best known for his work on Green LanternsAquaman, and his recent work on Future State: Justice League.

Last week, donations were being requested for blood by associates of Rocha in Brazil. Rocha was born in Brazil, lived in Minas Gerais, and signed an exclusive deal with DC in 2016, leading to him working on projects within DC Rebirth. His comic work preceded this, as he began working in the industry in 2010 on titles within the New 52, such as Lobo, Birds of Prey, and Batman/Superman.

Rocha’s passing was announced on Twitter by fellow comic artists Fabi Marques and Yildiray Çinar. Rocha’s co-workers, contemporaries, and fans spoke highly of his work, calling it modern, detailed, and breathtaking. They have applauded his ability to capture expressions and expertly translate scripts to art. He was an incredible, rising artist who seems to have left a positive impression on everyone he interacted with.

In aDen of Geek interview with DC editor Alex Carr in October of last year, Carr spoke about Rocha’s work:

The artwork by Robson Rocha is outstanding. Wait until you see him illustrate the new Wonder Woman we have, the new Batman, the new Superman, the new Green Lantern, the Aquawoman, and the new Flash. All fresh takes on costumes, powers, emotions, the character acting involved there is powerful.

Jim Lee, DC’s Entertainment Publisher, after announcing Rocha’s signing, stated that, “Robson’s style is exactly what we need for Green Lanterns. The DC Universe has something for everyone, and tells stories that reflect the society around us. Robson’s treatment of both new Lanterns – Jessica Cruz and Simon Baz – is dynamic and light, showing energy and movement in every panel. Having Robson join our ranks is a win for DC.

When he signed with DC, Rocha said: “To have the opportunity to work with the DC characters I admire and love so much is a dream come true. These heroes have helped me believe in a better and much more fantastic world. I hope that my contributions to these characters will help to inspire others.

Robson Rocha’s work has already inspired fans and will continue to do so. The talented artist is gone too soon, but he succeeded in leaving a strong impression on comic fans around the world. Rest in peace.
