An Animal Crossing: New Horizons fan welcomed the new year with an unconscious character thanks to a sneaky scorpion also attending the party. The New Year’s Eve event in New Horizons allows players to gather with friends and villagers to say goodbye to a year of adventure and welcome a fresh start at new projects and in-game goals. However, the event doesn’t protect player characters from the hazards of island living, including dangerous crawlies.

While the majority of gameplay in New Horizons is peaceful and relaxing, there are a few island critters that can be a frustrating problem for those not paying close attention. Tarantulas, which sell for a good number of Bells when successfully caught in a bug net, possess a venomous bite that can knock a player out. Wasps can be knocked loose from trees when they are shaken, resulting in painful stings to the character’s face. Scorpions, like tarantulas, can stab an unsuspecting victim with their tail, leaving them unconscious and woozy.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

An Animal Crossing: New Horizons player known as NantangItan on Reddit has shared a hilariously timed New Year’s Eve scorpion encounter, resulting in their character being unconscious in the plaza square as the New Year countdown ended. In the shared image, the player can be seen sprawled out on the cobbles of the plaza as the “Happy New Year” display flashes behind them, with all the villagers staring. The stealthy scorpion can be seen sneaking off at the bottom of the plaza, just hidden behind some fencing. To add to the humor of the situation, Isabelle and Tom Nook seem completely oblivious to the distraction being caused, as they smile and hold their glowsticks.

While the ill-timed bug attack may seem like something Nintendo should patch out of New Horizons events, the inclusion actually benefits the premise of the game. The choice to build a town on a deserted island comes with numerous risks, and while hurricanes and floods don’t seem to be a worry for town residents, the inclusion of irritable wildlife adds a realistic element to gameplay. Because players must participate in late-night events like New Year’s Eve outside in the plaza, it is a reminder that even a town built and thriving can still possess some of the natural dangers present before it existed.

To help minimize the threat of being bitten by a tarantula or stabbed by a scorpion in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, players can scout an area before the start of an event, or even carry a bug net to be safe. Clearing out any critters ahead of time can net players a quick profit in Bells, and safety of mind as they pose for New Year’s Eve photos. However, sometimes surprise Animal Crossing: New Horizons moments like these make the best memories and offer a funny story to share with friends.
