Adam Sandler has been named Vogue’s Fashion Icon for 2021. Sandler is the comedian and actor who has become a household name over the past few decades, known for his juvenile sense of humor and goofball comedy antics in film, TV, and comedy albums. Sandler appeared on SNL early in his career, then quickly moved on to film projects such as Billy Madison, Happy Gilmore, The Waterboy, and The Wedding Singer, eventually becoming a powerhouse at the box office, creating a billion-dollar industry out of his name.

While Sandler enjoyed tremendous success for his comedy roles and performances, the actor did not seem to be affected in a way that changed his style. Sandler has often appeared as the “everyman” in his films, portraying a simple, humble aloof type that isn’t championed over his looks or style, but rather his morality, humor, and charm. However, these personas translate similarly to Sandler’s real-life appearance, as the actor is known for presenting himself in a similar fashion, as frequently documented by paparazzi, especially in 2021.

Now, it appears that Sandler’s style has become in vogue by none other than Vogue Magazine, who have declared the actor to be 2021’s Fashion Icon. The venue declared Sandler’s style to be “Sandlercore” aka the “schlub” look, which focuses on XXL shorts and t-shirts that accommodate comfort over style. Sandler’s outfit choices were the most-searched fashion trend on Google for 2021, beating out the likes of Harry Styles, Lizzo, and Britney Spears, among others. His style has even inspired the trend to become emulated by influencers and TikTokers, as well as fashion designers, some of whom now make t-shirts and shorts with Sandler’s visage in mind.

Sandler signed an exclusive deal with Netflix in 2014, an unprecedented move at the time, which would see his future films debut on the streaming platform rather than in theaters. In a move that almost seemed preemptive to a pandemic, Sandler’s deal was ahead of its time in gauging the future of how audiences would seek out their entertainment. As his theatrical numbers seemed to dwindle, Sandler made the move to appeal to his fanbase, rather than the entire world, which has thus far been a big success for the actor, who churned out six movies for Netflix since the deal was made and recently extended the deal to make four more films, including a sequel to Murder Mystery with Jennifer Aniston, expected in 2022.

It may seem like an ironic joke to imagine Sandler as a fashion icon, but as with many things, the pandemic has altered the perception of what has been commonly viewed as the norm. As more and more people began working from home and fine-tuning their perspective to focus on what’s really important, it’s no surprise that opting for comfort over style (or rather, comfort as style) has become a new trend, spearheaded by Adam Sandler, of all people. What’s even more compelling about Vogue’s Fashion Icon declaration is that Sandler, as evidenced by his clothing choices, likely didn’t even try to win such esteem.
