Comedian and actor Adam Sandler has reacted to the TaylorMade golf team’s attempts to recreate Happy Gilmore’s swing. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the hit comedy, the likes of which truly kickstarted Sandler’s film career. Though he’d found success with Billy Madison – his 1995 debut as both a lead actor and co-writer, it was the temperamental Gilmore character and his unconventional golfing abilities that won audiences over.

It’s arguable in fact, that few Sandler films since have made the sort of impact that Happy Gilmore did. At the very least, in terms of which of the numerous characters that he’s helped bring to life over his lengthy career, Gilmore certainly ranks among the most memorable, if not the most memorable. Though today it seems that anything the former SNL star touches often inexplicably becomes a blockbuster hit, Happy Gilmore had no such momentum behind it and relied primarily on Sandler’s small but strong following amassed from his SNL days as well as his work in Billy Madison. The Gilmore character also managed to mesh perfectly with Sandler’s schtick as someone whose comedy can go from harmless baby chatter to maniacal shouting. This in itself carried many of the film’s funniest moments.

For Sandler, the Happy Gilmore character certainly remains the one that fans most often pay tribute to – even those in the world of professional golf. So far, it doesn’t seem as though there’s too much planned to officially mark the 25thanniversary of Happy Gilmore’s release. Fans of the film will likely remain hopeful that something significant takes place and in some cases, they’re even taking matters into their own hands. That was the case when members of TaylorMade’s golf team decided to take turns emulating Gilmore’s highly unique swing. The effort caught the attention of Sandler, who responded via his Twitter account. See Sandler’s response below:

It seems logical that golfers would be fans of Happy Gilmore, but it’s only been in recent years that proof of this love became public knowledge. Back in April of this year, Sandler cheered on professional golfer Will Zalatoris during the Master’s Tournament for his uncanny resemblance to the actor who played Gilmore’s caddie in the film. Zalatoris had previously shown his love for Happy Gilmore by getting “Mr Gilmore I’m Your Caddie” stamped on his wedge. Even with this most recent display of love for Gilmore and his unorthodox swing, however, there can only ever be one Happy and for quite some time now, fans have been eager for Sandler to return to the character in a sequel.

With the amount of love that Sandler’s Happy Gilmore continues to receive twenty-five years on from its release, a sequel does seem an obvious response. Earlier this year, Sandler admitted that although there have never been any talks about returning to the character, he’s open to the idea of a sequel. This is great news for fans who want to see Sandler return to the sort of comedy he was doing in the 1990s, but it remains to be seen what happens next.
