Adam Sandler’s new Netflix movie, Hustle, looks very different from his typical comedy fare in the first video for the sports drama. The film centers on a basketball scout currently down on his luck who discovers a once-in-a-lifetime player with a rocky past abroad and elects to bring him to the US without his team’s approval. The duo must come together in an effort to prove their worth to the NBA and to themselves.

Alongside Sandler, the cast for Hustle includes Ben Foster, Robert Duvall, Queen Latifah, Juan Hernangómez, Jordan Hull, María Botto, Ainhoa Pillet, Kenny Smith and Kyle Lowry. Development on the film was first announced in early 2020 when Sandler signed on to star and Jeremiah Zagar attached to direct on a script from A Star is Born‘s Will Fetters and Taylor Materne. Production on Hustle would run from late 2020 to early 2021 and now Netflix is offering the first look at the sports drama.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

As the new year kicks off, Netflix has unveiled a trailer reel for its 2022 film slate, revealing looks at a variety of the streamer’s major upcoming titles. One such film is Hustle, which shows Adam Sandler in a very different form than his typical Netflix comedy shtick as a down-on-his luck basketball scout. Check out the interesting video below:

The first Hustle video offers a nice look at the change of pace Sandler is bringing in the sports drama, from his fully bearded appearance to his inspirational turn as an inspirational coach for a potential basketball star. The film is certainly not Sandler’s first time with the sports genre, having risen to stardom in the late ’90s with the likes of Happy Gilmore and The Waterboy and revisiting it with the 2005 remake of The Longest Yard. The film also looks to be a return to more serious drama that Sandler has received much larger acclaim for in the past, including the Safdie brothers’ Uncut Gems, which has been cited as the best of his career.

Hustle marks the latest title in Sandler’s lucrative deal with Netflix via his Happy Madison Productions banner, which is reported to be worth up to $275 million. Also included in the new deal is a sequel to his hit comedy Murder Mystery with Jennifer Aniston, which is currently in production, and the sci-fi drama Spaceman produced by he and Channing Tatum, with rumblings of a Hubie Halloween sequel having come from the first film’s large viewership success for the streaming platform. While audiences await word on these new titles, they can look forward to the premiere of Hustle later this year on Netflix.
