A new behind-the-scenes photo from Netflix’s upcoming Addam’s Family series, Wednesday, shows director Tim Burton with the actor who will be playing Lurch. Starring YOU and Scream 2022‘s Jenna Ortega as the titular Wednesday Addams, Burton’s new series has been touted as a coming-of-age story focused on the famous family’s daughter as she attempts to stop a killing spree throughout her local township and unravel a 25-year-old mystery. Created by Smallville showrunners Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, the series was first announced with Burton’s involvement in October last year.

Following the announcement of Ortega’s casting in May this year, the much-anticipated roles of Wednesday’s parents Gomez and Morticia Addams were later revealed to be played by Luis Guzmán and Catherine Zeta-Jones respectively. Meanwhile, Wednesday’s younger brother Pugsley is set to be played by A Wrinkle in Time’s Issac Ordonez. Also joining the cast is Game of Thrones and Star Wars actress, Gwendoline Christie, who plays Wednesday’s school principal and former school rival of Morticia, Larissa Weems.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Rounding out the classic Addam’s Family lineup, the Tim Burton Daily Twitter account has shared a new behind-the-scenes photo of Burton and George Burcea, who will be portraying the family’s undead butler Lurch. While the new photo does not reveal the Romanian actor in costume, his height and facial features clearly hint at his physical suitability for the iconic role. Check out the new photo and a comparison with Carel Struycken’s version of the character from the 1991 Addams Family film below:

Given that Burton’s new series will shift the focus away from the rest of Wednesday’s family, it will be interesting to see how much of Lurch and the other classic Addams characters are seen throughout the show. With both Burcea’s Lurch and Ordonez’s Pugsley each only being credited for two out of the eight-episode long season, it would seem that audiences won’t get to spend much time at all in the Addams’ family mansion. Instead, much of the story appears to revolve around Wednesday’s new high school, Nevermore Academy, and her new teachers and classmates.

This aside, it most certainly wouldn’t be an Addams Family series without Lurch’s iconic character appearing, however briefly. Most fans would agree from this new photo that Burcea certainly has the physique necessary for the role. Given that his predecessor, Struycken, is still best known for his turn as the Addams’ butler, despite also having recurring roles in Star Trek: The Next Generation, the question will be how well Burcea comes to be known for his own performance as Lurch. Addams Family fans will be able to see Burcea in the role and judge for themselves when Wednesdayhits Netflix in 2022.
