It was the viral sensation of 2014 so here are the lyrics to Adult Swim’s famous Too Many Cooks short. Too Many Cooks essentially came out of nowhere in late 2014 when it was first broadcast at 4 AM on Adult Swim. The short starts out as a spot-on parody of the opening credits of any number of 1980s or 1990s sitcom, like Roseanne. The short film soon spirals completely out of control, with the fake credits becoming parodies of cop shows or sci-fi dramas like Battlestar Galactica – then a creepy killer starts slaughtering all the actors in the spot.

Too Many Cooks even features a parody of the old G.I. Joe cartoon, before it (sort of) ends back where it started. Being the network behind Aqua Teen Hunger Force and The Eric Andre Show, it should hardly come as a surprise something so dark, surreal, and hilarious emerged from Adult Swim. The entire show also revolves around the insanely catchy “Too Many Cooks” theme song, which is repeated incessantly throughout.

Since the short zips through any number of different genres over the course of eleven minutes, the Too Many Cooks theme undergoes a few variations along the way too. For those fans who feel like singing along, here are the “Too Many Cooks” lyrics.

It takes a lot to make a stew

A pinch of salt and laughter too

A scoop of kids to add the spice

A dash of love to make it nice

And you’ve got…

Too Many Cooks (x8)

It takes a lot to make a stew

But when it comes to me and you

And him, and her, and the baby too

Too many cooks, it’s true

The saying goes it’ll spoil the broth

Honey, I think that’s not true

Well, maybe too many cooks will spoil the broth

but they’ll fill our hearts with so much, so much love

…too many cooks!

A family is like a soup

Everyone adds an extra scoop

Mix an ounce of smiles so sweet

A dash of cool to add the heat

And you’ve got

Too Many Cooks (x18)

It takes a lot to make a stew

Especially when it’s me and you

and him, and Steve from corporate too

Too many cooks it’s true

The saying goes it’ll spoil the broth

Honey, I think that’s not true

Well maybe too many cooks will spoil the broth

but they’ll fill our hearts with so much, so much love

so much love, fill our hearts with love…

Too Many Cooks (x19)

It takes a lot to make a stew

I couldn’t face these streets without you

A dash of crime to add some spice

The city’s like a pressure cooker turned up too high

Some people say it’ll spoil the broth

But that’s not the American way

Too many cooks

Too many cooks will serve a helping of freedom and resist the forces of

evil!

It takes a lot to make a stew

A pinch of salt and laughter too

A scoop of kids to add the spice

A dash of love to make it nice

And you’ve got…

Too Many Cooks

Too Many Cooks (Repeat)

Too Many Cooks was created by Casper Kelly, who also created Your Pretty Face Is Going To Hell and the famous Cheddar Goblin advert seen in Nicolas Cage’s revenge thriller Mandy. Kelly also wrote the Too Many Cook lyrics while composers Shawn Coleman and Michael Kohler (Archer) scored the music. The killer seen throughout the short is played by character actor William Tokarsky, and the premise behind the character is that he wants to be a typical sitcom dad, but when he’s rejected by the cheerful world he inhabits, it sends him on a bloody killing spree.

Too Many Cooks quickly became regarded as a comic masterpiece due to its pitch-perfect riff on classic TV shows, and its almost David Lynch (Twin Peaks) descent into surreal horror. The theme song itself certainly adds to that flavor, and it’s not hard to imagine a sitcom like Too Many Cooks existing once upon a time.
