A spinoff of Adventure Time centering around the characters of Fionna and Cake has been ordered at HBO Max. Adventure Time was a massive hit for Cartoon Network, a charming and offbeat fantasy animated series that follows the adventures of Finn The Human (Jeremy Shada) and Jake The Dog (John DiMaggio) in the post-apocalyptic Land of Ooo. The show ran for ten seasons, concluding with the epic finale “Come Along With Me” in 2018. Since then, three hour-long specials have been released on HBO Max, collectively known as Adventure Time: Distant Lands. The most recent one, “Together Again,” saw Finn and Jake reunited, and a fourth special is set to release later this year.

Season 3, episode 9, of Adventure Time, “Fionna and Cake,” sees Finn and Jake forced to listen to the Ice King’s (Tom Kenny) fanfiction about gender-swapped versions of them and their friends, resulting in the characters of Fionna The Human and Cake The Cat. These alternate-universe versions of the Adventure Time characters proved to be extremely popular with fans, resulting in two additional episodes set in that universe as well as an official comic book miniseries. But while Finn and Jake have had in-depth character arcs and hundreds of epic adventures over the years, Fionna and Cake have yet to go on a fully-fledged adventure.

As part of its 283-episode run, Adventure Time has had success with several miniseries over the years, most notably the eight-part “Stakes” in 2015 that focuses on Marceline The Vampire Queen (Olivia Olson). With the Distant Lands specials all currently very well-received, it’s no surprise that HBO Max and Cartoon Network are interested in expanding the Adventure Time universe with another miniseries. Yet it’s also refreshing that they’re putting the spotlight on characters that have had very limited screentime but have still made a huge impact with fans.

It’s not currently known how many additional gender-swapped characters may appear in the series, but fans will undoubtedly hope for the reappearance of fan-favorite characters Prince Gumball (Neil Patrick Harris) and Marshall Lee (Donald Glover). The teaser for the Fionna and Cake spin-off additionally refers to a “powerful new antagonist” that is determined to erase the duo from existence, meaning the miniseries will introduce exciting new characters too. Adventure Time may have ended in 2018, but there’s still plenty of life in the Land of Ooo just waiting to be explored.
