SPOILERS for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. episode “Option Two” ahead.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. finally reveals the identity of the Destroyer of Worlds in the show’s latest episode, “Option Two.” Ever since the season 5 premiere introduced the mystery of how the world was destroyed the team has puzzled over who exactly is responsible for cracking the Earth apart. Those in the future believed Daisy Johnson aka. Quake to have been responsible for the destruction, with her being known as the Destroyer of Worlds. But once the agents returned to the present, they learned that the Destroyer of Worlds could be anyone.

Hale revealed to Coulson that “Destroyer of Worlds” is actually the name of a Hydra project utilizing the Particle Infusion Chamber. As she explained, she planned to infuse her own daughter, Ruby, with Gravitonium, hinting she’d become the Destroyer of Worlds. However, when Ruby was only infused with eight percent of the Gravitonium in last week’s episode – and then quickly killed by Yo-Yo – it seemed someone else was destined to become the true Destroyer of Worlds. Now we know exactly who that is.

In “Option Two,” Simmons and Talbot are pinned down in a room with the Particle Infusion Chamber and Gravitonium while the Lighthouse is being attacked by aliens sent by Quovas. Talbot’s mind has been somewhat fractured since he was saved from Hale, and especially since it was revealed he had been brainwashed using Hydra tactics. So, when Talbot wants to help fight off the aliens, he uses an ICER to take down Simmons. He then gets into the Particle Infusion Chamber and infuses himself with the other 92 percent of the Gravitonium, becoming the Destroyer of Worlds.

In the final few sequences of “Option Two,” we see Talbot display the strength of his powers. Not only does he destroy the aliens attacking the base en masse with seemingly very little effort, he also creates a tunnel out of the Lighthouse – which is meant to be an impenetrable safe house. Last we see of Talbot, he takes Coulson and lifts the both of them on a platform out of the Lighthouse through the passage he’s created. It’s unclear what exactly Talbot wants with Coulson, but it can’t be good.

When Ruby was infused and when Carl Creel touched the Gravitonium, their minds were plagued by Dr. Franklin Hall and Ian Quinn. Both men were absorbed into the Gravitonium and their consciousnesses fused with whoever touched the substance. This caused both Ruby and Creel a great deal of distress. While Talbot didn’t display any signs of similar distress, it follows that Hall and Quinn have joined with Talbot – and this is Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s way of introducing Graviton, the villain in the comics for whom Hall is named. Since Hall and Quinn both hate Coulson, it’s likely the Destroyer of Worlds has deadly plans for the S.H.I.E.L.D. director.

Further, we know that Coulson’s death on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is a key point in the timeline and offers a chance for the team to break out of the time loop in which the Earth is destroyed. Since Coulson is now in the hands of someone who has no qualms about using their powers to kill others, the time when the team needs to choose whether or not to save him seems to be quickly approaching. Now, with the identity of the Destroyer of Worlds revealed, we’re reaching the final stretch. With only three episodes left of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 5, we’ll soon see if the team is able to save Could and/or save the world.
