Season 5 of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will once again see the series looking backwards as it moves forward. As season 4 of SHIELD headed into its last story pod, the show used the Framework to pull back in past elements from the series. It offered a look at a show that was confident in the journey it had taken and had room to reexamine the events that led to the present. The Framework narrative itself even served as a bit of a reset, with the season ending with Coulson up in space.

Thanks to New York Comic Con, we now know a lot more about the new direction the show will be headed in when it returns in December. Yo-Yo (Natalia Cordova-Buckley) will be a regular on the series, and the show will dive deep into Marvel lore. And with events now occurring in space, SHIELD will reintroduce the Kree. Even before the race appeared in Guardians of the Galaxy, they served as something of the foundation for SHIELD. From Coulson’s resurrection to Daisy’s Inhuman blood, the Kree’s presence was continual on the show. Now, one of their artifacts is all set to return.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

As part of the footage shown at NYCC, we know that the Kree Monolith will be coming back to Agents of SHIELD. In fact, it looks as if there’s more than one. Considering Coulson mysteriously wound up in a space station at the end of last season, this may be what brought him there.

The Kree Monolith’s history on the show dates back almost as far as the Kree themselves. Held in the Helicarrier that Bobbi, Mack, and Hartley were on at one point, the mysterious object eventually consumed Simmons and transporter her to Maveth. Over time, we learned it had a long history with Hydra, who used the device to send people to Maveth as a sacrifice to Hive.

Eventually, the Monolith was destroyed, yet fragments of it were still powerful enough to open the portal. While those too were lost, it looks as if it wasn’t a singular device. Now, it appears that the devices abilities will be put to a different use.

While there’s still no sign of SHIELD connecting to the movies in the near future, the Kree and their artifact could be a great way to tie things together. The race will be a key part of 2019’s Captain Marvel, so there’s certainly an easy way to connect things. And with Peggy Carter set to appear in Avengers 4, it’s hard to believe Coulson will never return to the hold. We’ll have to wait a bit longer to learn whether that will happen, but with SHIELD returning soon, we should be getting a lot more information on the new season any day now.
