AirPods 3 pack a lot of improvements over their predecessor, but did Apple go the extra mile and improve battery life? This is one of the most important factors to consider when buying wireless earbuds. It doesn’t matter if a pair of earbuds sound amazing, have a comfy design, and are loaded to the gills with features. If they can’t maintain a long enough charge for how you use them, it’s not going to be a good experience.

This is an area where AirPods have always been just OK. They typically last long enough for most people’s average use, though endurance isn’t the main reason someone buys AirPods. Instead, the main draws to AirPods are their ease-of-use, seamless integration with other Apple devices, and features like hands-free Siri access.  Thankfully, AirPods 3 improve the battery experience in a few big ways.

Simply put, AirPods 3 deliver the best battery of any AirPods to date (not including AirPods Max). The latest earbuds deliver up to 6 hours of continuous listening time, or up to 5 hours when spatial audio is used. If someone’s using AirPods 3 to take a phone call, they’ll get up to 4 hours of talk time on a single charge. The charging case is improved as well. Combing AirPods 3 and their new MagSafe-compatible case, users get up to 30 hours of total listening time and up to 20 hours of talk time. Furthermore, placing AirPods 3 in the case delivers around 1 hour of listening/talk time within 5 minutes.

How AirPods 3 Battery Compares To Other Models

All of that sounds good on its own, but how does it stack up to previous AirPods? AirPods 2 and AirPods Pro are both rated for up to 5 hours of continuous music playback, and up to 3 hours and 3.5 hours of talk time, respectively. AirPods 2 and AirPods Pro also have less total battery life with their charging cases, squeezing out 24 hours of total listening time and 18 hours of talk time. For someone who primarily uses their AirPods for listening to music/podcasts, AirPods 3 should last an extra 6 hours before needing to be plugged in or placed on a wireless charger.

An extra hour of listening time or 6 hours of total battery may not sound like a huge jump, but that could make the difference in being able to go an extra day or two before your battery is totally depleted. For an accessory that’s meant to be used on the go and always ready for action, that’s not something to scoff at. There may be other earbuds on the market with even longer battery, but as far as AirPods go, AirPods 3 are a very welcome improvement.
