Following the decision to reopen its physical Apple Stores on March 1, 2021, it appears that customers are now being allowed to try on AirPods products again before buying them. While this might not seem like a big deal in an alternate timeline, it’s a notable step forward for the current world of 2021. Apple initially started closing its retail stores about a year ago in March 2020 in light of the COVID-19 pandemic that was quickly spreading all around the globe. Customers weren’t allowed in for any reason, all of Apple’s sales were being conducted online, and that’s how things went for a long time.

However, with a light now clearly visible at the end of the tunnel, everyone is eager to get things back to normal — people and companies alike. Following a year of social distancing and sheltering in place, there’s a rising desire to go back out into the world (safely, of course) and picks things back up where they had to be left over a year ago. Looking specifically at the tech sector, Apple is making a considerable step forward in that process.

As first reported by Bloomberg, some Apple Stores are now allowing customers to try on AirPods, AirPods Pro, and AirPods Max to try the products out before deciding to buy them. It’s something that no one would think twice about a year or two ago, but in a world where COVID still very much exists, it’s quite the decision to make. That said, it’s worth noting the ability to try on AirPods is currently limited to Apple Stores that are fully operational. Select Apple Store locations are still operating in the ‘Express’ phase where they’re only open for order pickups, and here, there’s no AirPod wearing of any kind.

Are Apple Stores Still Taking Safety Precautions?

Hearing that Apple is again allowing customers to try on AirPods may sound like things are completely back to normal for the company’s retail outlets, but there’s still quite a ways to go before the effects of COVID are no longer felt. As noted on the Apple website, Apple Stores are still requiring face masks to be worn at all times, touchless temperature checks are conducted on customers, store capacities are limited, physical distancing measures are in place, and deep cleaning is regularly practiced

It’ll likely still be a few months before Apple Stores look and feel like they did at the beginning of 2020, but even so, this is a notable step forward in that process. This is especially exciting for customers interested in buying AirPods Max which debuted in December 2020. There hasn’t been a good or easy way to try out AirPods Max before throwing down the $549 required to own a pair, but with physical testing now resuming in some Apple Store locations, that’s finally changing.
