The 1992 animated movie Aladdin may be a Disney classic, but it also contains the studio’s grossest moment. Disney re-established itself as an animation powerhouse in the 90s thanks to movies like Aladdin. The great characters, imaginative story, and memorable songs made films like Aladdin, The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, and The Lion King stand as some of their greatest release.

While these films have grown into their classic status, there are certainly moments that have not aged well – as is the case with most Disney movies. Aladdin is certainly not removed from this, with the retelling sometimes accused of cultural appropriation. More immediate is the Jafar and Jasmine relationship in the film. The villain’s plan eventually evolves to him staging a forced marriage with the princess, but a clear infatuation with Jasmine is built up throughout the movi. And, by the end of Aladdin, it is responsible for the grossest moment in any Disney film because of it.

Jafar makes his interest in Jasmine well-known early on Aladdin, with his original plan proposing that he should be the one who marries Jasmine and becomes king. What makes this interest creepy right from the get-go is the major age difference between them. While it isn’t explicitly clear how old each of them is, Jasmine appears to still be a teenager while Jafar is an old man. It all leads to Jafar essentially making Jasmine his scantily-clad servent, who then has to seduce and kiss him in the third act. Even though Jafar doesn’t force himself on Jasmine or demand the kiss from her, it is still creepy to see them lock lips. The age difference between them makes the lust that he has for Jasmine all the more unnerving. For a family-friendly studio like Disney, moments like these are strange to see in one of their movies, even if they were made almost three decades ago.

As gross as this kiss is, the good news is that Disney learned from this misstep when making the recent live-action Aladdin remake. The movie aged Jafar down to make him closer to Aladdin and Jasmine’s age. This alone would’ve made the kiss a lot less offputting, but the 2019 version of the film smartly avoided this moment completely: Jafar does still kidnap Jasmine in a bid to humiliate the Sultan, but that is as far as he goes with her. When he does suggest the possibility of them getting married, he only wants to do so for the power that it would grant him. Even without this kiss though, many still had issues with how Jafar was portrayed in the remake. While none of this makes the kiss in the original Aladdin any less creepy, at least we didn’t have to relive it in live-action.
