Gorgeous new fan art shows actor Alexander Skarsgård as an alternate universe’s Thor. Thor’s last appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe was in the explosive Avengers: Endgame. Endgame was not only a massive critical and commercial success but brought together heroes from across the MCU for one last showdown with Thanos.

Chris Hemsworth’s Thor has been a fan favorite in the MCU ever since his initial debut in 2011. Since then, the God of Thunder has been through his fair share of adventures, from assuming a key role in the Avengers to facing off with the demented Hela. After Thanos’ infamous snap, Thor is seen as an overweight, depressed shadow of his former self. However, he manages to regain his confidence after the Avenger’s time heist; by the end of the film, Thor wields Stormbreaker and Mjolnir in the Battle of Earth. Now, Thor is set to have yet another solo film, with Thor: Love and Thunder expected to premiere in 2022.

Digital creator artoftimetravel has designed some stunning fan art featuring Skarsgård as another universe’s Thor. In the Instagram post, Skarsgård wears Thor’s iconic costume, complete with his winged helmet. Artoftimetravel has included scratches on Skarsgård’s face as well, implying he was just in a fight. Behind him, a bolt of lightning crackles in the stormy sky, showcasing the Son of Odin’s powers. You can see artoftimetravel’s incredible work below:

Alexander Skarsgard as alternate universe Thor. Skarsgard confirmed he’s had talks with @marvelstudios and Kevin Feige before the role ultimately went to @chrishemsworth. What’s interesting is his father, Stellan Skarsgard, is part of the MCU as Dr. Selvig. While Hemsworth will still play Thor in Thor: Love and Thunder, artoftimetravel’s creation is a nod to the MCU multiverse, which will be further explored in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. The forthcoming film will star Benedict Cumberbatch as the titular Doctor Strange, who starts to untangle the many mysteries of the multiverse. As such, this leads to the distinct possibility of Strange encountering familiar heroes from different realities. While it’s unclear if Strange will run into another universe’s Thor, it’s undeniable that Skarsgård certainly looks the part.

That being said, Skarsgård was actually in the running to play Thor years prior. According to Skarsgård, he’d even met with Marvel’s Kevin Feige multiple times throughout the audition process and was sorely disappointed when he was passed over in favor of Hemsworth. Yet while Skarsgård missed out on playing Thor once, there’s no reason he shouldn’t be in the running again, should the opportunity arise. As such, although Hemsworth ultimately snagged the part, perhaps the multiverse is Skarsgård’s second chance to play Thor – albeit from a different universe.
