To survive in Valheim, Vikings will need to be tough and resourceful and defeat various enemy mobs, from hostile Greylings and Boars at the start of a new game to the various kinds of Fulings in the Plains. When Hugin deposits a Viking in the middle of the Meadows of Valheim for the first time, they experience a relatively peaceful wilderness with the occasional aggressive creature. However, the Viking warrior has been brought to this Norse version of purgatory to restore peace and order from the monsters trapped there, and though these bosses are not free roaming the Valheim overworld, they are a constant and ever-present threat. The five major bosses of Valheim can cause random enemy events that plague Vikings at any level and in almost any biome before they have ever been summoned.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

There are two kinds of random event in Valheim: Story-Based and Enemy-Based. They depend on where a player is in the main campaign of Valheim and the number of enemies they have killed. Both kinds of event can overlap, especially when a player is at their base. Players will recognize these events by a start message appearing on the screen and a red circle on the minimap with an exclamation mark in the middle, usually close to a player’s location. Here’s every possible one of these events in Valheim and how they trigger.

Story-Based Events and Triggers in Valheim

Story-Based events take place as a player progresses through the main Valheim campaign. Though there is no singular narrative to Valheim, the main campaign consists of summoning and defeating all five bosses.

In these mini-raid events, before being summoned for a fight, the boss for a certain biome will randomly cause a mob of lower-level enemies to attack the player in waves for a predetermined amount of time. Players will need to look out for the symbol and event starting message. An ending message will appear to signal the player when the event is finally over. Story-Based Events will not overlap with one another and typically trigger when a player is near their base or any structure with a Workbench.

There is one Story-Based event for each main boss. The events and their triggers and conditions appear below:

  • army_eikthyr: Triggers any time prior to defeating Eikthyr. Necks, Boars, and Greylings will attack the player near their base for 90 seconds. The event start message is, “Eikthyr rallies the creatures of the forest.” When the event ends, players will be alerted by the text, “The creatures are calming down.”
  • army_theelder: Triggered after defeating Eikthyr and prior to defeating The Elder. Greydwarfs, Greydwarf Brutes, and Greydwarf Shamans will attack the player near their base for 120 seconds. The event start message reads, “The forest is moving….” When the event ends, players will be alerted by the text, “The forest rests again.”
  • army_bonemass: Triggered after defeating The Elder and prior to defeating Bonemass. Draugr and Skeletons will attack the player near their base for 150 seconds. The event start message reads, “A foul smell from the swamp.” When the event ends, players will be alerted by the text, “The smell is gone.”
  • army_moder: Triggered after defeating Bonemass and prior to defeating Moder. Drakes will attack the player near their base for 150 seconds. The event start message reads, “A cold wind blows from the mountains.” When the event ends, players will be alerted by the text, “The cold wind is gone.”
  • army_goblin: Triggered after defeating Moder and prior to defeating Yagluth, the current final boss. Fulings, Fuling Berserkers, and Fuling Shamans will attack the player near their base for 120 seconds. The event start message reads, “The horde is attacking.” When the event ends, players will be alerted by the text, “The horde is retreating.”

Enemy-Based Events and Triggers in Valheim

Enemy-Based events in Valheim only trigger after players have defeated certain bosses and a number of different kinds of enemies. These events can trigger at random and can overlap with Story-Based events. Players will need to look out for the red circle and event starting message, as these events can take place anywhere in the world and are not bound by a player’s base or place in the story.

  • skeletons: After defeating Bonemass, Skeletons and Rancid Remains can attack the player for 120 seconds. The event start message reads, “Skeleton Surprise.” When the event ends, players will be alerted by the text, “Skeletons are tired of fighting.”
  • blobs: After defeating Bonemass, Blobs and Oozers can attack the player for 120 seconds. There is not currently a start or end message for this event.
  • foresttrolls: After defeating The Elder and killing at least one Troll, a mob of Trolls can attack the player for 80 seconds. The event start message reads, “The ground is shaking.” When the event ends, players will be alerted by the text, “The shakes start to fade.”
  • wolves: At any time, but typically after killing at least 1 Wolf, a pack of Wolves will hunt the player for 120 seconds. The event start message reads, “You are being hunted.” When the event ends, players will be alerted by the text, “The hunt is over.”
  • surtlings: After defeating Bonemass and killing at least one Surtling, a group of Surtlings can attack the player for 120 seconds. The event start message reads, “There’s a smell of sulfur in the air.” When the event ends, players will be alerted by the text, “The smell is fading.”

If players are interested in farming some of these aggressive enemies for crafting materials, they can always force-start a Story-Based or Enemy-Based event by inputting a Valheim cheat code or console command. After pressing F5 and inputting imacheater, the code to start an event is event [name]. For example, to start the Trolls Enemy-Based event, players would input event foresttrolls. To start The Elder’s Story-Based event, they would input event army_theelder. To end an event, players need to input stopevent. If they don’t care which specific event triggers but are in the mood to fight, they can use the code randomevent to begin a random event.
