A Marvel’s Avengers player calculated how much it would cost to unlock every cosmetic item in the marketplace; apparently, the cost adds up to a grand total of more than $3,000. The microtransactions in Marvel’s Avengers have served as a point of contention since the title’s launch in September 2020. In fact, one recent bout of backlash from the community resulted in developer Crystal Dynamics removing paid boosters due to pay-to-win concerns.

Cosmetics in the Avengers-branded live-service experience come in various forms, including full outfits, emotes, and nameplates for each of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. Of course, users can unlock many of the items in-game via objective-based rewards. In order to access countless others, however, players must visit the Marketplace and spend Credits. And there exists two distinct ways to earn more Credits in Marvel’s Avengers – completing in-game challenges or with real-world money. It would seem that unlocking all of the game’s cosmetic items can prove quite expensive, too.

Reddit user saali22 calculated the total value of every item featured in the Marvel’s Avengers Marketplace, taking all cosmetics into account but leaving out the price of bundles. As of now, the Redditor claims completionists would need to spend a whopping 331,750 Credits to unlock everything, which translates to $3,317.50. That’s right, all of Marvel’s Avengers in-game items are worth nearly $3,400 total.

The $3,000-plus figure is almost unbelievable; however, in the age of persistent games and microtransactions, such news should hardly come as a surprise. As Crystal Dynamics continues to support Marvel’s Avengers with new skins, the combined cost of all items is bound to climb even higher.

Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix released the Avengers title in September 2020 to middling reviews across the board. While critics and users agreed the story campaign held plenty of promise, the endgame content felt lacking at best. A dearth of post-launch updates in the months following release ultimately resulted in Marvel’s Avengers underperforming, which cost Square Enix dearly in terms of revenue earned for the year 2020. The publisher’s President, Yosuke Matsuda, recently addressed the “disappointing” performance in an annual report, admitting Crystal wasn’t the best fit for a games as a service project, despite the studio’s renowed chops in the action-adventure genre. Still, Marvel’s Avengers may be on a path to redemption, especially if the Spider-Man DLC for PlayStation platforms is favorably received.

Marvel’s Avengers is out now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.
