All Of Us Are Dead: Is [SPOILER] A Halfbie Now?

All of Us Are Dead‘s halfbies or zombie hybrids are asymptomatic for the most part, a fact that has raised questions about the infection status of one key character. Once they learn to control their zombie urges, halfbies can pass off as human very easily. Although instances of the Jonas Virus turning the infected into halfbies rather than full zombies are rare, it can happen after a bite from an infected person with either version of the zombie virus in All of Us Are Dead.

Things escalated very quickly during the pilot episode of All of Us Are Dead. After getting bitten by an infected hamster, Kim Hyeon-ju (Jung Yi-seo) gets imprisoned by Lee Byeong-chan (Kim Byung-chul) inside Hyosan High School’s science lab. When Hyeon-ju escapes, she is taken to the clinic, where she is restrained by nurses and several students who get scratched and bitten – starting the quick spread of the Jonas Virus. One of these students is Nam On-jo (Park Ji-hoo).

All of Us Are Dead‘s viewers have questioned the infection status of On-jo, who was one of the first main characters to be attacked by a zombie. Although On-jo seems fine throughout the series, there’s reason to believe that some halfbies are able to fully resist the urge to act like a full zombie. Ironically, it is the bully Gwi-nam (Yoo In-su) who is the only halfbie or asymptomatic zombie that never shows signs of going full zombie, even when he decides to bite his schoolmates. However, the answer to the mystery of On-jo’s infection status is simple: she’s not a zombie nor a halfbie because she was only scratched – not bitten – by the zombie. It wasn’t On-jo, but the nurse who got bitten and started the spread of the virus outside of the clinic. Although it’s conceivable that the zombie’s bloodied hands transferred the virus to On-jo – and that she has somehow become immune – it’s just as conceivable that no such transference occurred. Moreover, On-jo doesn’t show any sensitivity to 24hz frequency tones, nor any other signs of being either a halfbie or a full zombie.

However, all this could change in All of Us Are Dead season 2. As revealed in the videos that Lee Byeong-chan (Kim Byung-chul) made to document the origins of the Jonas Virus, it’s a living organism that evolves very quickly, changing into different variants the moment it’s faced with antibodies, white blood cells, or other threats. As the military continues its experiments on the infected hosts of the Jonas Virus while halfbies roam around Hyosan undetected, the Jonas Virus is bound to also continue its evolution in All of Us Are Dead season 2. Depending on how this plays out, maybe there’s something to the theory that On-jo is actually a halfbie.

All of Us Are Dead has very quickly risen to the top spot on Netflix. Following the hit dystopian death games series Squid Game, All of Us Are Dead is the second Korean-language drama to become Netflix’s most-watched series. Expectations are high for what’s in store for On-jo and the other survivors in All of Us Are Dead season 2.
