The narrative of Pokémon Legends: Arceus is more story-driven than a lot of previous entries in the series, but getting through to the true ending can take some time. Like other Pokémon games, Legends: Arceus has quite a lot left for players to do once the credits roll. After the credits, the story continues for several more main quests, and even once players come face-to-face with the game’s actual villain, there’s even more to do before reaching the final ending.

[Warning: Spoilers for Pokémon Legends: Arceus are below.]

The main story of Pokémon Legends: Arceus is focused on time travel. The player’s chosen protagonist is sent back to ancient Sinnoh (when the region was known as Hisui) by Arceus. There are some strange happenings going on in Hisui, where the Galaxy Expedition Team is trying to settle the region. It’s an era when Pokémon aren’t necessarily trusted by people, and the two feuding clans – Diamond and Pearl – are bickering over which of their deities is the one true Almighty Sinnoh. Not long after falling from the sky with nothing but their modern-era clothes and the mysterious Arc Phone, players meet Professor Laventon – who recruits them into helping fill out Hisui’s first-ever Pokédex.

The main story typically follows the same beats as other Pokémon games, albeit with more freedom for exploration. Instead of Gym Leaders, players must battle frenzied Noble Pokémon in Legends: Arceus before being allowed to venture into the next subregion. They’ll also raise up their Star Rank with the Galaxy Expedition Team, which comes with a promotion and nice rewards from Captain Cyllene each time. The Expedition Team’s leader, Commander Kamado, usually gives players their mission between unlocking each of the five subregions in the game.

Pokémon Legends: Arceus’ First Ending Explained

In order to reach the first ending of Pokémon Legends: Arceus (and the credits), players simply need to get through the main story. The sky begins to darken and the protagonist is blamed, leading to them being exiled from Jubilife Village. After falling out with the Galaxy Expedition Team’s leader, the protagonist will come face-to-face with Commander Kamado atop Mt. Coronet near the Spear Pillar. After acquiring the Red Chain while in exile and battling Kamado, the protagonist will face off against the Legendary Pokémon Palkia or Dialga, depending on which Clan Leader they chose to bring along while forging the Red Chain.

After this, the other Legendary will appear and the crew (including Kamado, who is back to being friendly toward the protagonist again) will escape to a nearby camp. This starts off a short quest that involves finding ore for a new Poké Ball called the Origin Ball (which, like the Master Ball in the modern era of Pokémon, has a 100% catch rate). Once players use the Origin Ball to capture Dialga or Palkia (again, this depends on which Clan Leader they brought along earlier) and both Legendary Pokémon are quelled, the sky returns to normal and all is well again.

Pokémon Legends: Arceus’ Second Ending

After this, players will receive a number of new Requests and main story missions that require them to catch other Legendary and Mythical Pokémon in Legends: Arceus. They’ll have help from Volo, who at this point seems highly suspicious and far more than a regular Gingko Guild member. Eventually, this will lead to a battle with Volo and Giratina in Legends: ArceusGiratina has two forms, and these follow immediately after the battle with Volo, so players will need to come prepared.

Once Volo and Giratina are defeated, Giratina will abandon Volo and leave him with the protagonist atop Mt. Coronet. Volo will help the protagonist turn the Celestia Flute into the upgrade Azure Flute, which can be used to call Arceus. However, not long after this happens, the Arc Phone will start to ring and players will be reminded that they first need to meet every Pokémon. Again, this will make several new Requests and main story missions appear, prompting players to catch even more Legendary Pokémon before reaching Legends: Arceus‘ true ending.

Pokémon Legends: Arceus’ Final True Ending

Although Volo escapes, Professor Laventon says later on that he’s helping them with completing the Pokédex and perhaps has a reason to give aid. This is probably because he’s vowed to find Arceus and not because he’s really turned over a new leaf. With Volo out of the way, the protagonist can complete their Pokédex and finally play the Azure Flute atop Mt. Coronet, which sends them into another dimension.

It’s here that the protagonist will finally meet Arceus and catch the titular Pokémon. A difficult battle ensues, which plays out like the previous Noble Pokémon fights (albeit with a huge difficulty curve). Once Arceus is defeated, though, it will bestow a piece of itself to the player. Once this is finished, the protagonist can return to Jubilife Village to celebrate with the members of the Galaxy Expedition Team. However, the protagonist isn’t returned back to their own time period and Volo is still at large. It’s possible these story beats are being saved for future Legends: Arceus DLC, or remaining in Hisui could just be a way of allowing players to continue exploring once they’ve beaten the game and have reached its true ending.

Generally, most players will beat Pokémon Legends: Arceus is around 30 hours. However, depending on how much exploring and side content they do, it can take closer to 50-60  hours to reach the game’s true ending. Completing every Request, finding every Unown, and discovering every Wisp in each subregion can take up a lot of time, too. However, the only requirements for reaching Pokémon Legends: Arceus‘ true ending are to catch one of every Pokémon in the Hisuian Pokédex (which means finishing a few Requests) and to play through the main story missions. Hopefully, future DLC will resolve some of the story threads that have been left hanging and will allow the protagonist to return to their own time period if they wish.
