Artist Jerad S. Marantz has shared an unused mech suit design for The Rhino, as he appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. That film was the followup to 2012’s The Amazing Spider-Man, which saw Andrew Garfield take on the role of Peter Parker/Spider-Man. Though both movies had their merits, the series stopped with the second film. It didn’t help that, at that point, the MCU was thriving, making it more difficult for other comic book movies to break through. It also explains why Sony rebooted Spider-Man again in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War. This was thanks to a new agreement with Marvel that allowed Spider-Man to appear in the MCU.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

As one of the villains in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, The Rhino’s real name is Aleksei Sytsevich. He’s played by actor Paul Giamatti and winds up being instrumental in Peter Park taking up the mantle of Spider-Man again following Gwen Stacy’s death. After putting Rhino away near the start of the movie, he’s broken out of jail at the end. This time, he wears a mech suit, and he and Spider-Man fight again. This helps Peter realize that, despite his grief, he has to continue on as a hero.

Now, one concept artists reveals an earlier version of The Rhino’s mech suit. In an Instagram post, Marantz shared the new image, which shows a fairly different suit than what fans saw Giamatti wear in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Marantz also revealed in his caption he created the art “years before [Rhino] ever showed up in Amazing Spider-Man 2,” suggesting the plan to have the character join the movie was in place far in advance. Check out the artist’s work below:

Here’s some early concept art for the #rhino for amazing Spiderman. Seems like for a while they were talking about having him in a Mech suit. I did this years before he ever showed up in amazing Spiderman 2. #therihno #spiderman #amazingspiderman #amazingspiderman2 #conceptart #peterparker

Even though The Amazing Spider-Man movies fizzled out, Sony now has a hit on its hands with Holland in the role. Fans found him instantly endearing in Captain America: Civil War, and the sheer excitement of seeing Spider-Man finally interact with the Avengers helped, too. Both Sony and Marvel were also smart to play up his relationship with Iron Man. Their close bond helped integrate Spider-Man further into the MCU and also led to one of Avengers: Infinity War‘s most moving moments. Though his time with Iron Man has sadly come to an end, Spider-Man will be seen in Spider-Man: Homecoming 3 and at least one more MCU movie.

Marantz’s early take on the Rhino mech suit seems to be a bit sleeker than the version seen in the final film. It also looks more like someone actually wearing the armor vs. sitting inside it, as Giamatti’s character does in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. As Sony continues work on its Spider-Man universe, there’s always a chance The Rhino could pop up again. Maybe next time he’ll wear something more like Marantz’s original design.
