WARNING: This article contains spoilers for Spider-Man: No Way Home

The Amazing Spider-Man 3 is trending on Twitter after the release of Spider-Man: No Way Home. The first big-screen adaptation of the Spider-Man comics came in 2002 from director Sam Raimi. Tobey Maguire played Peter Parker for three movies before Sony decided to reboot the character with Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man films. Garfield played the character twice, but due to the poor reception of The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Sony made a deal with Disney to include Spider-Man in the MCU with Tom Holland.

Spider-Man: No Way Home is on track for a stellar opening weekend and has been getting incredible reviews so far. Marketing materials for the film focused on the return of past Spider-Man villains like Doc Ock and Green Goblin, among others. This led to rumors that Maguire and Garfield would also be returning to help Holland’s Spidey, a rumor that ended up being true. All three actors teamed up at the end of the film, allowing fans to see Maguire back up on the big screen after 14 years and Garfield after seven years.

Audiences erupted when the actors returned in Spider-Man: No Way Home, and Garfield’s role has led to The Amazing Spider-Man 3 trending on Twitter. Fans are calling for the canceled sequel to finally happen, with many also wanting Maguire to return in Spider-Man 4. A handful of fan tweets can be read below:

Before Holland was cast as Spider-Man for the MCU, Sony had developed plans for The Amazing Spider-Man and a Sinister Six movie. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 had cut a scene including Shailene Woodley as Mary Jane, a plot point that would have been explored in the sequel. Ultimately, the scene was cut, giving Peter and audiences time to mourn the loss of Gwen Stacy. Garfield’s films weren’t as well-received as Maguire’s Spider-Man trilogy, but with the current popularity of Spider-Man: No Way Home, it makes sense fans are calling for The Amazing Spider-Man 3.

Garfield and Maguire may have returned in Spider-Man: No Way Home, but it seems unlikely they will return again. Sony has plans for Spider-Man 4, 5, and 6, but they look to be connecting new characters like Venom, Morbius, and Kraven the Hunter to Holland’s Spider-Man. Miles Morales was also teased in Spider-Man: No Way Home, so it’s likely Sony and Disney are more interested in focusing on new generations of Spider-Man rather than going backward. Seeing Maguire, Garfield, and Holland together on the big screen was a dream come true for many fans, but the studio may just not want to risk making The Amazing Spider-Man 3 given the poor reception of past films.
