Samantha Win, who plays the warrior Euboea in Justice League, has praised Zack Snyder’s portrayal of the Amazons in his version of the movie. Snyder was initially set to helm the Justice League, but unfortunately had to exit the film during its post-production stages following a family tragedy. The project was subsequently taken over by The Avengers director Joss Whedon, with the 2017 release going on to receive largely mixed reviews from both critics and audiences alike.

Almost immediately after Whedon’s Justice League hit theatresfans began to rally for the film’s original director to “#ReleaseTheSnyderCut.” After years of campaigning, audiences were delighted by the release of Snyder’s four-hour cut of Justice League earlier this year, which many agreed gave the film an entirely new perspective, with the movie receiving considerably warmer reviews than Whedon’s 2017 release. In particular, one scene that many felt was improved by the Snyder Cut was Steppenwolf’s arrival on Themyscira, in which he takes on the Amazons while in pursuit of the Mother Box they have been carefully guarding for years.

Now, Win, who plays Euboea, has praised Snyder’s Justice League for how it represented the Amazons and said that she felt more of a connection with those scenes in the second cut of the movie. Speaking to Insider, Win shared that, for her, “the connection wasn’t as strong” with the 2017 release and how Snyder’s take on her character’s death within the film “felt so much more significant and symbolic.” The Army of the Dead star went on to say that there was “a night and day difference” between how she felt about the two releases. Check out Win’s full quote below.

“When I watched the 2017 version, it almost made me think, ‘Oh, that’s just the performance I gave and that’s just what the story was’ because they had used much of what I had filmed, but it just looked different than I thought it was going to, the connection wasn’t as strong. I just wasn’t feeling it as much. It was very surprising to me how different it felt just edited and put together by someone else. In Zack’s version, I did feel the connection with the queen more. I felt like it meant more, there was more significance put on my character, Euboea, as representing all of the Amazonians. It felt so much more significant and symbolic for all of the women on the island, instead of it just being kind of a random death. It meant something in ‘Zack Snyder’s Justice League’, I didn’t know that it could be like that. So it was a very pleasant surprise. I just had no idea until I watched it and I felt a lot better about myself and my performance, but also it was a night and day difference in how I felt about women in the movie and the emotional journey of the characters. It just reinforced the idea that the director and the eyes putting it together is so important.”

In both cuts of the film, Euboea dies a courageous death while fighting Steppenwolf on the island of Themyscira. The Amazonian warrior is crushed to death by her horse while defending the Mother Box, having previously served her Queen Hippolyta for thousands of years. While the scene plays out in a similar fashion in both versions of Justice League, Snyder’s cut is certainly more fleshed out when compared to its predecessor and offers a much more meaningful take on the heartbreaking scene.

The differences between Whedon’s and Snyder’s approaches to not only the warrior’s tragic death, but also the events that unfold between the Amazons and Steppenwolf on Themyscira are in stark contrast. As Win notes, the Snyder cut certainly creates more of an impactful connection between the audience and these characters. The general consensus among audiences appears to be that the 2021 release of Zack Snyder’s Justice League tells a more crafted and purposeful story, and Win is not the first of the film’s stars to share their preference for the Snyder Cut. With many fans hoping for the restoration of the so-called Snyderverse in the future, it seems these characters would be in good hands with the Justice League director.
