There are many mid-range PC processors available in 2021, and with the Ryzen 5000 G-Series, AMD has two compelling options at affordable prices. PC components are always fun to talk about, but doing so has come with a huge caveat for the past year. The chip shortage is ongoing, scalpers continue to be a nuisance, and crypto mining shows no signs of slowing down. Because of all that, buying processors and graphics cards continues to be a chore. Saying that might be like beating a dead horse at this point, but it’s the reality of where the PC market has been — and still is.

Ever since the Ryzen brand hit the scene in 2016, it’s stood out as one of the best for PC builds — whether someone’s building a budget rig or a top-of-the-line one. Ryzen chips are often praised for their capable performance, competitive prices, and work seamlessly with AMD’s Radeon graphics cards. They aren’t always easy to buy, but AMD’s chips are great purchases when available at retail pricing.

The Ryzen 5000 G-Series chips were previously exclusive to large companies like Dell and Razer. As of August 5, 2021, they’re now available for regular consumers. AMD currently has two models to choose from, including the Ryzen 7 5700G and Ryzen 5 5600G. The Ryzen 7 5700G is the most capable of the duo, offering 8 CPU cores with 16 threads, a 3.8GHz base clock speed, and 4.6GHz boost clock speed. By comparison, the Ryzen 5 5600G delivers 6 CPU cores, 12 threads, 3.9GHz base clock speed, and 4.4GHz boost clock speed. Both processors have a 7nm design with AMD’s Zen 3 architecture, which AMD touts for its “focus on single-core performance, energy efficiency, and reduced latencies.”

Ryzen 5000 G-Series Pricing Starts At $259

In addition to the CPU horsepower, both processors are also equipped with built-in Radeon graphics. It’s reported that they should be able to play most modern games at 1080p resolution. Folks that want their games to look the absolute best will certainly still need a dedicated GPU, but that should be more than enough power for casual players with a small case.

When it comes to pricing and availability, the Ryzen 5000 G-Series is quite competitive. The Ryzen 7 5700G has an MSRP of $359, while the Ryzen 5 5600G is $100 less at $259. Both processors are available directly from AMD and on Newegg, and as with all PC components, don’t be surprised if they get sold out for long stretches of time.

As for which of the two chips is the better buy, it really comes down to how tight a budget someone’s working with. For $259, the Ryzen 5 5600G is a really great value. It’s not the fastest processor on the market, but it’s competent for most workflows, has a healthy number of CPUs, and getting decent integrated graphics at this price is a steal. The Ryzen 7 5700G is an objectively better processor with two additional CPUs, more threads, and a higher boost speed, but not everyone can afford a $359 processor. Buy the Ryzen 7 if it’s within budget, but if not, the Ryzen 5 is a great alternative with a few small cutbacks.
