FX’s American Horror Story is known to bounce back and forth between decades and eras, and in the most recent season, 1984, the creators decided to use bright colors and aerobics-obsessions as a backdrop. 1984 paid homage to a beloved decade before social media and Wi-Fi and used the simplicities of a slasher-themed storyline. This season kept things simple, but it had some unique twists along the way, like a true AHS season.

Season ten is right around the corner, and since AHS is such a beloved show, viewers are probably re-watching their favorites seasons to get ready for Double Feature. Even though 1984 is the most recent season, it’s best to catch up on the latest characters, storyline, and epic finale and remember its development throughout the season.

10 Brooke Thompson

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.” – “I guess we’re both the final girl.”

From the get-go, it’s obvious Brooke Thompson (Emma Roberts) is shy and reserved, and when she’s approached by Montana Duke (Billie Lourd) in the aerobic gym’s shower, she’s caught off guard. Montana caught her looking at one of her guy friends in the class and confronts Brooke about it.

By the end of the season, Brooke has been through it all. She’s come face-to-face with “The Night Stalker,” Richard Ramirez (Zach Villa), survived Camp Redwood, and almost died from a gunshot wound. But, in the end, Donna Chambers (Angelica Ross) and Brooke form a bond through their experience and are the remaining survivors from Camp Redwood. By far, Brooke Roberts is Emma Roberts’s most likable character on AHS.

9 Montana Duke

“Hi, I’m not a lez, just friendly.” – “Go Bobby, go!”

Besides the gory opening scene, the first genuine interaction was between Montana Duke and Brooke Thompson. While they’re showering after an aerobics class, Montana semi-introduced herself when she comments on Brooke’s physique.

Montana goes back and forth between the villain and the hero but ultimately is one of the good guys. When Benjamin Richter’s (John Carroll Lynch) son Bobby Richter (Fitt Wittrock) shows up at Camp Redwood, Montana does everything she can to shoo him away and live a normal life. In the end, she saved him from Margaret Booth (Leslie Grossman) and, along with the other ghosts, brutally murdered her so Bobby could escape. Although Brooke seems like the main character of the series, Montana has much deeper relationships with the main cast and is the best character overall.

8 Margaret Booth

“Welcome to Camp Redwood, I’m Margaret Booth, I’m the owner.” – “Please, there’s no such thing.”

Margaret Booth does a great job hiding her sinister motives and cheerily greets the new camp counselors to Camp Redwood, who she later attacks and murders. Her first scene shows her chopping wood, proving to the young counselors she’s approachable and willing to work alongside them.

By the end of the season, Margaret has taken out almost all of the counselors, plus others over the years. When Bobby travels back to Camp Redwood, Margaret confronts him, but not before Lavinia Richter (Lily Rabe) defends him. When Lavinia tells Margaret he’s innocent in all of this, Margaret’s warped brain can’t comprehend what that means.

7 Xavier Plympton

“5, 6, 7, 8…!” – “Your head on a stick.”

Xavier (Cody Fern) is first seen directing an aerobics class, where almost all of the main cast is first introduced. In a classic 1980s vibe, he is enthusiastic and comes off as friendly and motivated. Xavier’s best trait would be that he’s ultimately a good guy who means well.

Xavier was manipulated by Margaret and is later killed by her on Camp Redwood’s grounds. Unfortunately, Xavier turns to the dark side and teams up with Montana by killing future visitors. By the end, he and the other ghosts have the chance to get revenge, and his final line sets the mood and scene for Margaret’s death.

6 Trevor Kirchner

“Hey, you guys know you’re not supposed to be co-ed fraternizing?” – “What the f**k!”

At first glance, Trevor Kirchner (Matthew Morrison) comes off as authoritative, but the moment he opens his mouth, it’s obvious he’s anything but that. Trevor provides comic relief to this season and has a huge…ego. He’s Camp Redwood’s director of activities, but not the activities viewers think about.

Trevor is generally a good person, but he’s taken out by Margaret, like most of the main characters. Once he becomes a ghost, Brooke helps him to Redwood to be with Montana forever. Like most of the ghosts stuck with him, he’s last seen throwing Margaret’s body parts into a wood chipper. His last line happens when her blood sprays him.

5 Chet Clancy

“Hey.” – “Die, motherf**ker!”

Chet Clancy (Gus Kenworthy) isn’t much for talking and is more known as the athletic hunk of the season. At first glance, it’s obvious Brooke is attracted to him, so when Montana introduced them, his greeting is short and sweet, just like him. However, unlike the other characters, Chet doesn’t have a lengthy backstory.

By the last episode, Chet is full of rage and bans together with Xavier, Montana, and the rest of Camp Redwood’s ghosts. He has a huge hand in killing Richard and Margaret and is last seen cussing and taking swings at Margaret’s body.

4 Mr. Jingles/Benjamin Richter

“Pretty good, since you followed me here.” – “And know I will always love you, that’s all that matters, okay?”

Benjamin Richter is a man of few words, but when he breaks out of Red Meadows Asylum, he’s headed for Camp Redwood but realizes Dr. Karen Hopple (Orla Brady) followed him. When he confronts her, he kills her, but not before he mutters his first lines.

When Bobby comes back to Camp Redwood to find answers, Benjamin is a ghost and has returned to his previous state. In a heartwarming exchange, he lets his son know that he loves him and is stabbed in the back by Margaret.

3 Nurst Rita/Donna Chambers

“You say you found him in the middle of the road?” – “Now go find what you’re looking for.”

Also known as Nurse Rita, Donna Chambers is first seen aiding the young hiker the group hit on the road. While viewers know her role ran much deeper than a volunteer at an infamous summer camp, at this point, she’s innocent and plays the part.

By the end, Donna was one of the few survivors left from Camp Redwood. Although she advises Bobby to go live his life and leave Camp Redwood and its secrets behind, she stands behind him when she realizes her words won’t stop him from going to find what he was looking for.

2 Richard Ramirez

“Shut up, where’s the jewelry?” – “Not so much for you.”

True crime fans will know the backstory of Richard Ramirez and the terror and panic he caused in the 1980s. He’s introduced in 1984 and is first seen crawling through Brooke’s open window, hovering above her and demanding her to give him her jewelry.

By the end, Richard still considers himself untouchable and sets his sights on Bobby. However, before he can kill him, Xavier tackles Richard and kills him once again.

1 Ray Powell

“We’ve collected each other over the years.” – “You gotta get across on your own.”

Ray Powell (DeRon Horton) is the heart of the group and lives with guilt. So when Montana introduced Brooke to the rest of the clan, Ray chimes in and gives a little insight into how the group met and when.

Ray is eventually killed, and to the very end, he had a soft spot for Brooke. After she’s shot in the stomach by Margaret, he helps her out of Camp Redwood so she doesn’t remain trapped and miserable. Then, when he’s done all he can, he tells her to walk the rest of the way.
