Roanoke is the sixth season of American Horror Story, and by this point, the anthology series had collected an epic main cast that continued to portray insidious characters. This season sets itself apart from the others because it portrayed a show within a show.

The season often paid homage to classic horror movies that fans might’ve not noticed. Now that everyone knows, check out the season again and relive the Roanoke colony’s terror upon the locals and new residents.

9 Agnes Mary Winstead/Thomasin ‘The Butcher’ White

“I am the queen of every hive, I am the fire on every hill.” – “We consecrate our holy right with blood.”

“Hello, I’m Agnes Mary Winstead and I play the part of The Butcher in “My Roanoke Nightmare.” – “I would love to come back because I think we’ve only scratched the surface on what makes The Butcher tick.”

Kathy Bates starred as Thomasin ‘The Butcher’ White, and from the get-go, her presence promised future episodes filled with rage and torment. The only loyalty she has in this new world is to Scáthach (Lady Gaga).

Thomasin created a lot of pain and some of her followers didn’t agree with her choices or her commands. Ambrose White (Wes Bentley) stepped up to the plate after her last line and plunged himself and Thomasin into the flames in front of them.

Agnes is an obsessive actress who was born to play the part of ‘The Butcher.’ Her first line is during an interview for “My Roanoke Nightmare,” where she can be seen beaming because of her newfound role.

During a convention called Paleyfest, Agnes appears with the rest of the cast during a panel, where she’s chomping at the bit to get another chance to play the role she became so infatuated with.

8 Shelby Miller

“From the very first moment, I felt danger there.” – “Oh, thank you, that’s really sweet.”

Lily Rabe played a traumatized wife who went through a miscarriage and almost lost her husband Matt (André Holland). When the couple decides to purchase the picturesque and suspiciously affordable farmhouse, Shelby knew something was wrong when she first moved in. What was to come was something she could’ve never imagined.

When the survivors and cast of “My Roanoke Nightmare” came together at the end, a fan calls out the original Shelby. Like her personality, she quietly but generously took the comment she received to heart.

7 Audrey Tindall (Playing Shelby Miller)

“Help, somebody, help us!” – “Are you sure it’s not me you love?”

Director Sidney Aaron James (Cheyenne Jackson) decided to go back to the scene of the crime and tape “My Roanoke Nightmare.” To play the role of Shelby, he cast Audrey Tindall (Sarah Paulson), a rambunctious British actress. She’s first seen alongside her fictional husband, Dominic Banks (Cuba Gooding Jr.). Because the fictional series was a play-by-play of the actual incidents, Audrey played a scared woman more times than not.

By the end, the entire cast was brought together at Paleyfest in 2016. Audrey’s true character shines through when she comments herself when it was really directed toward the real Shelby Miller (Lily Rabe). This is just one of many roles Sarah Paulson has taken in the series, and Audrey falls in the middle of the pack when it comes to a character’s likability.

6 Matt Miller

“My family was in danger, and all I could do was watch.” – “I am in love with her Shelby, she’s the reason why I came back.”

At first, viewers took to Matt Miller after being attacked by a gang walking by him and Shelby. After deciding to move away from the big city, he had no idea what was about to happen. When he was later interviewed after the incidents, he felt helpless and wished he could do more.

In an odd turn of events, Matt is seduced by Scáthach and realizes he’s fallen in love with her. After Shelby and Dominic find him in the basement with the immortal English woman, he tells his wife he loves someone else, and in turn, Shelby bludgeons him to death.

5 Dominic Banks (Playing Matt Miller)

“That seems inexpensive, what’s wrong with the property?” – “Do I not get no love?”

Dominic is the actor cast to play the role of Matt Miller, and he is first seen on the set and original grounds of the Roanoke home. It also seems like a real situation when he and the fictional Shelby are at the farmhouse auction, asking why the selling price is low.

During Paleyfest, Dominic’s egotistical ways come to a head when a female fan is seen admiring Rory Monahan (Evan Peters), but not him. He makes it apparent when he wants a little recognition too.

4 Dr. Elias Cunningham

“I knew it. I knew it was real!” – “No, don’t eat it!”

Dr. Elias Cunningham (Denis O’Hare) appeared on a scratchy videotape, declaring he knew something or someone was real the entire time. His reasoning for being a pivotal character was unknown at this point, but he proves later that he was one of the first to realize how cursed the house and the land around it are.

By the end of the season, the good doctor’s fate is in the hands of the inbred Polk family. After realizing they’re cannibals, his body part becomes their next meal. After Mama Polk (Frances Conroy) offers Dominic and Audrey a piece of jerky, Elias swiftly demands they not eat it. Viewers can only guess the reason why. In fact, Elias’s death remains of American Horror Story’s most intense deaths overall.

3 Ambrose White/Dylan

“Mother, the people are starving and winter is almost upon us.” – “I shall not stand by and watch thou shed another drop of innocent blood!”

“Stop! It’s me, it’s me.” – “Okay, if you see any weapons, grab them.”

In a flashback, Ambrose White (Wes Bentley) is seen in a heated discussion with his mother, Thomasin. After his father left the group, he tried to be the sensible one and bring up the fact that everyone is starving.

In a final heroic act, Ambrose stands up to his vicious mother and commands she stops the killings. Because Thomasin is a monster, he grabs her and throws her into the fire, along with himself.

Dylan played Ambrose, and upon waiting for his cue to enter the Roanoke grounds, he decides to show up after Sidney doesn’t call him. To make a grand entrance, he dressed up as Piggy Man and terrified Audrey and Lee Harris (Adina Porter).

Dylan teams up with Audrey and Lee to find Money Tumusiine (Angela Bassett) and get the heck out of dodge. After showing promise he will be the hero of the day, he’s taken down at the getaway vehicle and is killed and used in a ritualistic murder.

2  Lee Harris

“Shelby never liked me, which is fine because I was never a huge fan of hers.” – “It’s going to be okay.”

Lee Harris is a complex character, and throughout the season, her story is dissected. When she goes to stay with Shelby and Matt after strange happenings at the farmhouse, she’s interviewed during the filming of “My Roanoke Nightmare,” telling the crew she and Shelby never got along.

By the end of the season, Lee has gone through hell and back. She’s witnessed the carnage of the colonists; she’s been captured by the Polk’s and has narrowly escaped death several times. After she returns to the crime scene, her final line is her reassuring a young female ghost in the farmhouse.

1 Monet Tumusiime (Playing Lee Harris)

“Put down the gun!” – “Put down the gun!”

Coincidently, Monet Tumusiime’s first and last line of the series is the same. She played the role of Lee Harris and took on certain characteristics, like her alcoholism, which caused her problems. Both of these scenes are on “My Roanoke Nightmare,” where she’s reenacting Lee’s law enforcement job while being a strong and forceful female.
