Indian actress Jyoti Kisange Amge gained fame for portraying Ma Petite in the fourth season of American Horror Story. The actress, according to the Limca Book of Records and the Guinness Book of Records, is the world’s smallest living woman. She was declared so on her 18th birthday in December of 2011, standing at a height of 2 feet and 0.6 inches (62.8 centimeters). Reportedly, Amge’s height is due to a growth anomaly called achondroplasia. Amge is 6.2 centimeters shorter than the former world’s shortest woman, a 22-year-old American citizen named Bridgette Jordan, who is 2 feet and three inches. It’s worth noting that overall, Amge is not history’s shortest woman – that title is held by Pauline Musters (1876-1895), who was just 24 inches tall.

Amge played Ma Petite in American Horror Story season 4, which was subtitled Freak Show. She appeared in almost every episode, including the finale. The season aired in October of 2014; in the season, Ma Petite is a freak show performer as well as an assistant to Jessica Lange’s character, a sideshow leader named Elsa Mars. Elsa took Ma Petite under her wing, often carrying her around and treating her like a child. Nevertheless, Freak Show gave Ma Petite a tragic ending – she was killed by strongman Dell Toledo (Michael Chiklis) so that her body could be sold to a museum. Ma Petite’s death impacted the whole season; for instance, Elsa killed Dell for what he did to one of her most beloved friends.

Before Amge became known to a mainstream viewing audience as Ma Petite, she appeared in the 2009 documentary called Body Shock: Two Foot Tall Teen, and later she was an occasional guest participant on the Indian reality television show Bigg Boss 6, which is the Indian equivalent of the show Big Brother. She even became a fan favorite thanks to the humor she provided. In 2012, she made headlines when she posed with Chandra Bahadur Dangi – the world’s shortest man, from Nepal – for the 57th edition of the Guinness World Records. During that same year, Amge co-hosted Lo show Dei record with Teo Mammucari on an Italian television channel.

In 2018, four years after she was on Freak Show, Amge was in filmmakers Ajith Ashok’s short film Maatharam, a three-minute film that addresses women’s issues. In July 2020, Amge allowed viewers to get a glimpse inside of her life in the TLC special The World’s Smallest Woman: Meet Jyoti. The special – which can be streamed on Prime Video – details Amge’s story, from India to America, and demonstrates her day-to-day life. Part of the special shows Amge shopping for clothes in the baby section of a store, but explaining that people shouldn’t treat her like a child just because of her small stature.

Amge hasn’t done much acting since her stint on American Horror Story. But, she has done other notable work. Amge is involved in social service, and throughout the COVID-19 pandemic has worked with the Nagpur police to urge citizens to remain home during the lockdown periods. Until Amge’s next film or television role, fans can find her on social media. She makes Tik Tok videos with her friend under the account @atul_Bhoyar_, boasting more than 5 million followers.
