While very little is known about American Horror Story season 10, Ryan Murphy offered fans another teaser via his personal Instagram that teases the return of the Rubber Man, but what could this possibly mean for the season?

Ever since the cast announcement trailer for season 10, speculation has been running wild amongst fans of FX’s popular horror anthology series. Murphy is known for giving teaser trailers and other hints between the breaks to tide fans over, but also places Easter eggs and other hints about what’s to come in the seasons themselves, often giving fans hints as to which episodes they can analyze to find said hints. With the spread of  COVID-19 still putting many productions on hold, it’s unknown whether American Horror Story season 10 will arrive on time, as usually the show premieres in the fall on FX, traditionally either September or October, and teaser trailers start to arrive in the late spring and early summer months.

However, Murphy has been good to fans already, easing some of the concerns regarding the wait by revealing a promotional image for season 10, which many speculate could have something to do with aquatic horror or other unsolved mysteries based on the show runner’s caption regarding any number of unknown frights that are washing up on shore.

What The Rubberman’s Return Could Mean For AHS 10

The Rubber Man is arguably one of the most iconic villains in American Horror Story history, and has made appearances in multiple seasons. The suit has been donned by multiple people as well, including Tate Langdon in season 1, Murder House, Chad Warwick (Zachary Quinto), and then by Michael Langdon (Cody Fern) in season 8, Apocalypse. While it made sense for the suit to make a reappearance in Apocalypse, given that it was meant to be the long-teased crossover between season 3, Coven, and season 1, it isn’t immediately apparent why the Rubber Man would return for season 10 of the series.

Originated by Chad to rekindle the flame in his marriage, the suit ended up being worn by Tate, one of Murder House’s ghostly residents while he killed both Chad and his husband, Patrick (Teddy Sears). Later, Tate wore the suit when he raped Vivien Harmon (Connie Britton), which resulted in her becoming pregnant with his child; given that Tate is dead, the offspring between a ghost and a human was prophesied to be the Antichrist and bring about the End of Days. This came to fruition in season 8 when Vivien and Tate’s child, Michael, grew up to bring about the apocalypse before being killed by Mallory when she traveled back in time before he came into his powers and ran him over with a car.

Evan Peters has been announced to return for season 10, and Tate is the most likely person to don the Rubber Man costume again; Chad never harbored any ill-intent when he wore the suit, and Michael was not allowed to become a ghost and join the rest of his family. Instead, his grandmother Constance (Jessica Lange) let him bleed out in the street, likely because she feared what he would become if she let him live. Ghosts can only travel on Devil’s Night, so Tate is trapped in Murder House until then. Since American Horror Story normally has a Halloween episode, it’s possible Evan Peters might just reprise his role for one episode, if fans are correct in speculating that season 10 will feature an East Coast location instead of California, where Murder House is located.
