Despite Casey Affleck’s important cameo in the American Pie, he was noticeably absent from the third film’s wedding events. The original film was a 1999 classic coming-of-age movie about high school senior Jim Levenstein (Jason Biggs) and his group of friends – Oz (Chris Klein), Stifler (Seann William Scott), Finch (Eddie Kaye Thomas), and Kevin (Thomas Ian Nicholas) – who made a pact to lose their virginity by prom. The incredibly popular first installment led to a collegiate iteration in American Pie 2 and later, American Wedding which was originally intended as the third and final installment meant to round out the series and showcased the post-college core cast as Jim and, American Pie alum/Jim’s girlfriend since the end of American Pie, Michelle (Alyson Hannigan) getting married.

Throughout the series, American Pie featured an incredible supporting cast including actor Casey Affleck, who had a brief, uncredited cameo as Tom, Kevin’s older brother in the original movie. At a time where the boys were seemingly lost in where to even start when it came to picking up girls, let alone pleasing them, they turned to Tom who offered help in the form of “The Bible”, described as a secret sex manual that had been passed down over the years to local high school boys. In later installments of the series, it’s revealed that the original creator of “The Bible” is Jim’s dad.

By the third film of the incredibly expansive American Pie franchise, Casey Affleck’s Tom was no longer needed as the face of the future for these now-grown men and therefore did not return for the wedding in American Wedding. Tom represented a different time in the boys’ lives when they struggled to engage with girls, but now they had met women they were ready to commit their lives to. Rather than trying to grow into men like Tom, the core cast of guys developed by taking life lessons from a respectable and dependable father figure, and no one was better suited for the job than Jim’s dad.

While Tom was the key to the American Pie characters and their early sexual education, his lack of development as a character throughout the franchise meant they left him and his lessons behind. Jim’s dad was in a position to teach them about marriage and what it means to be in a relationship. For all of the outrageous elements of American Pie, the relationship between Jim and his father was always an authentic one, in that Jim rebelled against his father’s wisdom in his youth to try to be cool like an older brother figure, i.e. Tom, only to grow to appreciate his father and emulate him as an adult.

Considering Tom was older and seemingly left “The Bible” behind by the original American Pie – and presumably being closer to the boys’ age than Jim’s dad – many may have thought that he might have been able to help shepherd them into their future. However, Jim and his dad were exceptionally close, even at their most divided, making Jim’s dad ideal for shaping the America Pie kids’ best futures. Beyond that, American Pie held onto some universal truths for the audience in showcasing Jim’s reliance on his father to help shape Jim in becoming the quality man his father was. For all of these reasons, Casey Affleck’s Tom, while an interesting player in the gang’s adolescence, could never have created the lasting important impact Jim’s dad did and therefore wasn’t a necessary part of the wedding.
