Sarah Potenza brought soul to the America’s Got Talent stage during her audition, but the first time she performed on stage singing was on The Voice season 8. The 41-year-old might not have won the show, but she did gather a fanbase of America’s Got Talent fans who recognize her from the American singing contest. Here is everything to know about her time competing on The Voice.

When Sarah came to America’s Got Talent, she joked around with the cameras and said she’s “a less is more kind of girl,” except with her larger-than-life personality and outrageous assembly of large gold jewelry. “I just love more, I love gold, I love sparkly and glitz and everything,” she said. When she was young she wanted to be like another singing competition judge Mariah Carey and since Sarah was 4 years old, she said she knew she would become a singer.

The Rhode Island native delivered a soulful rendition of “Worthy” by Mary Gauthier on AGT, which was originally released as an acoustic country-style song. After a standing ovation from the crowd, the judges showered her in compliments with Howie telling her she’d taken her success and worthiness from within and spread it throughout the world and Simon calling her extraordinarily good. When Sofia asked Sarah what took her so long to come to the show, she said she didn’t think she was worthy, but little did Sofia know Sarah had a history with a different judging panel.

The Voice Blind Auditions

When she first auditioned for The Voice, Sarah sang “Stay With Me” by Faces. All four judges turned their chairs around, with Adam Levine and Pharrell Williams on their feet midsong. During the final lyrics, the self-proclaimed bold, brassy singer dropped to her knees. Ultimately she chose Blake Shelton as her coach.

The Voice Battle Rounds

In the next round, Sarah sang “Gimme Shelter” by the Rolling Stones against Hannah Kirby. Christina Aguilera said the performance blew her socks off and called Sarah “a force to be reckoned with.” In the end, Blake called it the best battle he had ever been a part of and chose Sarah as the winner as the newly married judge said there was something so different about her. Sarah said she didn’t expect to hear her name called, but her husband Ian Crossman said he knew she’d get to the next round because she’s amazing.

The Voice Knockout Rounds

During the Knockout Rounds, Sarah sang a cover of “Wasted Love” by Matt McAndrew. With the way she picked up the microphone stand and belted with her eyes closed, viewers could tell just how into the song she was. She won against Brian Johnson who performed “Nothing Ever Hurt Like You” by James Morrison.

The Voice Live Playoffs

Unfortunately, Sarah’s cover of “Free Bird” by Lynyrd Skynyrd was not enough to keep her in the competition. She was eliminated during The Voice Live Playoffs. In an interview with South Bend Tribune, she said that she was happy she lost. “The whole plan was to get on a TV show to do this Kickstarter to raise money for my first solo album,” she told them. “My plan was to get on the show and be on there long enough to get a bunch of fans. You don’t really want to win the show because then you are on their record deal. The record deal is not bad, but it isn’t what I wanted.”

Regardless of her fate on The Voice or whatever America’s Got Talent has in store for her, Sarah already has a secured group of fans. The rock and roll star has released two albums, available for purchase on Sarah’s website, along with a clothing line including shirts that say “Worthy.” But given her reason for competing on The Voice, maybe this America’s Got Talent gig is just another way to get more fans.
