In the multiplayer social deduction game Among Us, players are divided into either crewmates who must complete tasks or imposters who need to kill the crewmates. Generally in a game, there is one imposter, but that can be changed in the settings. The goal for the crewmates is to figure out who the imposter is before they all are killed.

The way this is done is through discussion, which happens in one of two ways. One, a player can report a dead body upon finding one. Two, a player can call an emergency meeting by pressing the red button in the starting area. The players must communicate with each other to figure out who the imposter may be to achieve victory. The imposter must be skilled at lying and deception in order to win. At least that is how games are supposed to go. What happens when players decide to cheat?

Dealing with Discord cheaters in Among Us

There is hacking in Among Us as well, but that requires installing other programs. The simplest method of cheating is using a voice chat service like Discord. Here’s a scenario. The imposter kills one of the crewmates, then out of nowhere another player calls an emergency meeting, naming the imposter. How does the player know even if they are across the map from the imposter? It’s likely they are cheating by being in communication with the dead crewmate through Discord.

Communication is an important part of the game. Generally, it is done through an in-game text chat. While the ghosts can speak to each other in chat, the living crewmates cannot see their text. However, nothing is stopping players from speaking to each other using external programs like Discord, and in fact, this can be a preferred method among friends. Dead crewmates are supposed to be quiet, but this is based on an honor system. Unfortunately, some people have no honor, and that leads to the problem. There’s no reward for winning other than bragging rights. No unique items or skins or other unlockables.

As of now, there isn’t much of a way to deal with cheating either. InnerSloth, the developers of Among Us, are working on solutions, but they are only a three-person team. For now, players will have to deal with cheaters themselves.

When people notice this behavior of crewmates having knowledge when they shouldn’t, it’s best to let others know. The host of the game can kick out players, but then the cheaters can just join another game instead.

Another solution is for players to simply play with people they know and trust. For some, it can be difficult to find a group big enough to populate a full game, but smaller games can be fun too. After all, it’s most important is that people have fun, and not at other’s expense.

Among Us is available now on PC, Android, and iOS.
