The social deduction game Among Usskyrocketed into popularity back in 2020 as its online cooperative features found major success among the gaming and streaming communities. Since then, however, its success has started to decline despite relatively frequent large updates from its developers. What can Among Us do to keep its current players interested – and, more importantly, to draw people back to the game?

The success of Among Us has contributed to the game’s significant social presence online, as well as the size of its substantial modding community. In fact, it’s possible that Among Us‘ mods are part of what’s left so many players unimpressed with Innersloth’s updates – it seems that no number of new roles and customization options can compare to the scope of what’s offered to players through the use of mods. Other titles like Minecraft face a similar problem.

This could be what’s contributing to the decline of Among Us‘ popularity. Despite Innersloth’s promising Among Us 2021 roadmap, which was revealed at this year’s Summer Game Fest and outlines major upcoming changes such as new game modes and player roles, the game has evidently been unable to reclaim the scope of its 2020 success. At this point, Among Us will have to provide something big in order to draw old players back, as well as keep its current player base interested. What options should Innersloth consider moving forward?

Among Us 2 Could Help Save The Game

Back when Among Us was first beginning to take off, a sequel project titled Among Us 2 was scrapped by the developers in order to instead focus on polishing and updating the first game. At the time, it was exactly what Among Us needed – it helped draw more players into the game and expanded significantly on what was already there, allowing the gameplay to run more smoothly under a heavy load. However, it could be time to revisit the idea of an Among Us 2, putting its development back on the table and using it as an opportunity to branch into something entirely new. It seems fairly clear that additional maps aren’t likely to support the game enough on their own in the long run.

As unique as Among Us is in terms of its art and other stylistic choices, at its core it’s very similar to other social deduction games such as Mafia, Town of Salem, or Werewolf. Regardless of what big updates it receives, its central gameplay doesn’t drastically change – which means that unless Among Us comes out with dozens of other game modes or something more unique like a story campaign in the near future, the game will still on some level be competing with similar titles. However, by re-introducing Among Us 2, an opportunity could be created for people to return, giving the new experience a try, or otherwise stick around Among Us to prepare for what big changes its sequel may bring.
