Andrew Garfield couldn’t help but laugh at Tom Holland for accidentally spoiling Spider-Man: No Way Home. The actors shared the screen for the first time as two different versions of Spider-Man in the Jon Watts-directed flick. But while Garfield did a really great job keeping his involvement in the film a secret, Holland clearly struggled.

Despite persistent rumors, not to mention multiple leaks, Marvel Studios and Sony decided to stay mum regarding the inclusions of Tobey Maguire, Charlie Cox, and Garfield in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Thanks to the film’s multiversal nature, villains from other dimensions – such as Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin, Jamie Foxx’s Electro, and Alfred Molina’s Doc Ock – entered the MCU fold. This left fans convinced that their respective Spider-Man counterparts would eventually appear. So when the first Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer was released, introducing these villains to the MCU, the public was further convinced that both Maguire and Garfield would be in the movie — particularly the latter, who was speculated to be the one to save MJ (Zendaya) from her dramatic fall.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Said falling scene was an immediate topic of conversation online as it mimicked Gwen’s (Emma Stone) death in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, in which Garfield’s Spider-Man failed to save her in time. Still, both Marvel Studios and Sony decided to keep the moment officially under wraps. Unfortunately, despite the studios’ wishes, Holland inadvertently supported the Garfield rumors in a press junket interview. Now, Garfield gets to react to that specific moment in a new BBC Radio 1 video, and since Spider-Man: No Way Home has been out for a while now, he could just freely laugh at his co-star’s terrified reaction once he realizes what he’s done. Garfield did a great job insisting that he wasn’t in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Unlike Maguire, the actor had to be visible to promote his other projects, including the critically-acclaimed tick, tick…BOOM!. So, naturally, the press found a way to incorporate questions about the rumors of his Marvel return into nearly every interview. But he never cracked and was adamant that he wasn’t in the threequel. Considering how many times he’d been asked about it leading to the release of the flick, it makes sense that he finds Holland’s slip hilarious. But long-time MCU fans shouldn’t be surprised about this. Along with Mark Ruffalo, Holland has made a name for himself for accidentally spoiling his movies. In fact, Marvel Studios needed to pair him up with Benedict Cumberbatch during Avengers: Infinity War‘s press junket to ensure that he wouldn’t blab.

Garfield clearly enjoyed his time working with Holland and Maguire in Spider-Man: No Way Home. That resonated with fans and now many of them are demanding that Sony make The Amazing Spider-Man 3 starring the actor. No word about this yet, but between the fan clamor and the burgeoning Marvel multiverse, this could easily be done. Garfield could act as the Sony universe’s primary Spider-Man while Holland maintains his place as the wall-crawler in the MCU, and perhaps they can cross paths again in a future project.
