The Amazing Spider-Man star Andrew Garfield opens up about his feelings on the cancelled Sinister Six spinoff movie from Drew Goddard. Development on the film first began in late 2013 when Sony announced it would be developing two spin-offs to Garfield’s webslinging franchise, The Sinister Six and Venom, with Goddard set to write and direct the former. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was planned as a proper launching point for the film as it introduced audiences to the universe’s Rhino and Green Goblin while also teasing the arrivals of Vulture, Doctor Octopus, Mysterio and Kraven the Hunter in the post-credits sequence.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Initially set for a November 2016 release, it was revealed that The Sinister Six would be a redemption story for its villainous characters and would likely not include Spider-Man, though his appearance wasn’t completely ruled out. However, following the below expectations box office returns of The Amazing Spider-Man 2, both spinoffs were initially scrapped and Sony partnered with Marvel Studios to bring Spider-Man to the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Tom Holland playing the character. Sony would ultimately return to their interconnected universe plans with the Tom Hardy-led Venom and the upcoming Morbius and Kraven the Hunter films and with Jamie Foxx planning to return as Electro in the MCU’s Spider-Man: No Way Home alongside Alfred Molina’s Doctor Octopus from Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy, the universes seem to be aligning for the Sinister Six to make their way to the screen once again.

While chatting with Collider for his work in the upcoming biopic The Eyes of Tammy Faye, Garfield reflected on the scrapped Sinister Six spinoff project tied to his tenure as Spider-Man. In addition to confirming he participated in discussions to participate in the film, Garfield praised Goddard’s vision for the project and expressed his desire to see him make the film one day in the future. See what Garfield said below:

“I don’t know how close it got, but I definitely had a few meetings, and it was really exciting. I’ve got to say, because I love Drew so much, and I love Cabin in the Woods, and the other stuff that he’s made. We just got on like a house on fire. I loved his vision, he’s so unique and odd and off-kilter and unconventional in his creative choices. So that was definitely a fun couple of months, but life. It would have been cool. Maybe one day he’ll get to do it, but it would’ve been cool.”

Though Garfield may not be unveiling every secret for the film, his promises of Goddard’s vision for The Sinister Six certainly should create a point of intrigue and disappointment in fans that the film was ultimately scrapped. As evidenced by his work on Netflix’s Daredevil series, Goddard has a strong understanding on comic book characters and remaining true to their universes. While Dane DeHaan and Foxx’s portrayals of Goblin and Electro polarized fans, the notion they could unite for a Sinister Six with the likes of Kraven, Mysterio, Vulture and Doc Ock certainly proved exciting, especially should they face off against Garfield’s well-received Spider-Man.

It is interesting to note that Garfield states that Goddard may be able to make Sinister Six one day in the future. Though likely no longer a part of the meetings for the film, the fact that Sony’s Spider-Man Universe is a financial hit and is bringing Venom, Kraven and Morbius to the screen — all of whom have been members of the villainous team at various points in the comics — he may have a point that Sony could bring the Cabin in the Woods filmmaker back into the fold for the project. Only time will tell if Goddard gets another shot at Sinister Six or if Garfield is indeed returning as the webslinger for Spider-Man: No Way Home when it hits theaters on December 17.
