Actor Andrew Garfield felt that he was too old to be wearing a spandex costume in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Garfield had previously played Spider-Man in The Amazing Spider-Man films (from 2012-2014) in his late 20s to his early 30s. Despite repeatedly denying his involvement, Garfield recently reprised this role in the latest Spider-Man movie. No Way Home dragged several familiar faces across the multiverse after a spell went wrong, leading to Garfield fighting alongside Tom Holland and Tobey Maguire as three different versions of Spider-Man.

No Way Home has been an incredible success with fans elated to see these three together on screen, helping to make it the third highest-grossing movie at the US box office. Before filming, however, Garfield was nervous about returning to the role. The actor was apprehensive to get back into his old Spider-Man costume, worrying about how he would look. As a result of this concern, he started working with a personal trainer to ensure that he felt comfortable in his original suit.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

During an interview on The Graham Norton Show (via Entertainment Tonight), Garfield reiterated that he felt he was too old to be seen in a tight-fitting costume. The actor discusses working on Spider-Man: No Way Home, stating that he had assumed that chapter of his life was finished, but was pleasantly surprised to be asked back. Much to Garfield’s amusement, another guest jokes that he was lucky to not be the oldest Peter Parker, referring to a 46-year-old Maguire (who also wore a spandex Spider-Man costume for the role). When asked if he felt that it was risky to return to the character Garfield replied:

“It was a stupid thing to do and a really scary thing to attempt especially in the costume – a 38-year-old should not be in Spandex! I’m far too old to be playing Spider-Man but they asked me back, which was the sweetest thing ever.”

Despite his early anxiety, Garfield appeared to settle back into the role with ease. The actor has been incredibly vocal about how much he enjoyed the experience and is even open to continuing to work with Maguire and Holland in the future. Maguire and himself spent a few weeks before filming developing the relationship between their respective Peters. Garfield has found himself attached to the brotherly dynamic created by all three Spider-Men that No Way Home has become known for and is keen to keep it going.

Although this currently appears to only be an idea, fans are just as excited by the prospect as Garfield is. Following the premiere of No Way Home, fans jump-started their campaign for an Amazing Spider-Man 3, desperate for more of Garfield’s Peter Parker, and hoping to finally see the completion of the trilogy after the third movie was cancelled a few years prior. Despite his fears, Garfield’s performance has been praised as one of the film’s many highlights, and it’s difficult to picture Spider-Man: No Way Home without him in his iconic costume.
