Andy Garcia recently shared some insight on what to expect from the upcoming Father of the Bride remake. The Oscar-nominated actor is set to star as the titular father in what will be the second remake of the 1950 film of the same name, the first being the 1991 hit starring Steve Martin followed by its 1995 sequel. The new remake will be titled The Father of the Bride and will be given a Latinx spin.

Much like the original films, The Father of the Bride will center on a father facing hesitation about giving away his daughter at her wedding. The remake will incorporate a cultural standpoint into the story, putting a Cuban-American and a Mexican-American family together before the upcoming nuptials. The Father of the Bride‘s cast will also include singer Gloria Estefan, Isabela Merced, and Diego Boneta, and is to be directed by Gary Alazraki.

In an interview with ET Canada, Garcia talked about how the two families of different cultures will engage more in the film before the big wedding. The actor also discussed how excited he was to be working with his fellow Cuban-American and good friend, Estefan, as they will be playing husband and wife in the film. “In our case, it’s a totally different approach. The families are different. It is actually the two families engaging more. [There’s also this] family from Mexico City, so it’s a convergence of those two cultures and how they deal with one another.

“She is the most extraordinary lady. She is an extraordinary artist, you know, self-made. Her and Emilio [Estefan], I admire them tremendously. They have been friends for a long time and I would say they’re the truest of friends. They never waver. They never skip a beat.”

The Father of the Bride will be one of three films starring Garcia in 2022. His first will be Big Gold Brick from Samuel Goldwyn Pictures, to be released Friday, February 25th in theaters and on digital. Garcia will also appear in The Expendables 4 opposite Sylvester Stallone and Dolph Lundgren. No release date has been announced yet.

Whether or not the upcoming The Father of the Bride will be as funny as the original films starring Steve Martin will be completely up to audiences this June. There’s also the question of who in the new cast will replace Martin Short in his famous role as fan-favorite Franck Eggelhoffer or if there will even be a similar character in the latest remake. Either way, if The Father of the Bride is able to be a funny and heartwarming comedy while also staying strong in Latinx representation, it could be well worth the walk down the aisle.
