Angelina Jolie has been one of the most prominent forces in acting for a number of years. Since making her debut as a child all the way back in 1982 and starting her career in 1993, she has gone from strength to strength, appearing in everything from bizarre independent films to huge-budget blockbusters. While she has won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, she is also well-known for her activism regarding various causes.

We’ve used IMDb to compare the five best films in which Jolie has an important role, to the five considered to be the worst. We’re focusing in on her acting roles here, not her bumpy directorial career.

10 BEST: Maleficent (7.0)

Created with a huge budget, Maleficent was a change of pace for a Disney film. Technically, it fell under the bracket of ‘live-action remake’, something Disney seems obsessed with at the moment, but the retelling of the Sleeping Beauty story from the antagonistic perspective was unique.

The darkness behind Jolie’s portrayal of the titular character was very interesting, with incredible visuals from Robert Stromberg supporting. The film received good reviews, a sequel and three-quarters of a billion dollars at the box office.

9 WORST: By The Sea (5.3)

Angelina Jolie’s directorial ventures aren’t always exactly great. She has had a few surprisingly good moments, but the majority of her skill very clearly lies in acting.

Despite this, she wrote, directed and starred in By The Sea with her husband (at the time) Brad Pitt. Sounds like a co-starring recipe for success, right? Unfortunately, the romantic drama was viewed as boring, and had a disastrous showing at box offices.

8 BEST: Kung Fu Panda 2 (7.2)

The sequel to the Jack Black-starring Kung Fu Panda of 2008 was surprisingly well-received. Jolie reprised her role as Master Tigress and delivered her trademark stern understanding to the role.

The film might have missed out on an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, but considering this was an animated sequel (something which typically doesn’t go so well) it was very well-received.

7 WORST: Mojave Moon (5.2)

Mojave Moon came in 1996, before Jolie’s career had really exploded into the level of fame and success we know today. As such, she is by far the most famous name on the cast list, despite not being at the time of release.

This road movie was met with a rather flat, uninterested response by most audiences and critics.

6 BEST: Girl, Interrupted (7.3)

Despite being released just three years after Mojave Moon, Angelina Jolie was now becoming a household name despite having not quite reached the levels of Hollywood lead-role stardom.

Despite this, Girl, Interrupted was her Academy Award-winning performance. She took how Best Supporting Actress for her role as Lisa Rowe, a sociopath who had been a patient in Claymoore psychiatric hospital since the age of nine.

5 WORST: Lookin’ To Get Out (5.2)

Despite being Angelina Jolie’s acting debut, she wouldn’t have a role in another film for eleven years after Lookin’ To Get Out.

Aged just seven, she played Tosh, the daughter of Jon Voight’s character Alex Kovac. Interestingly, the reason she landed the role was that she is the real-life daughter of Jon Voight.

4 BEST: Kung Fu Panda (7.5)

Kung Fu Panda 2 has already appeared on this list, so it’s only right that the original film would make an appearance at some point. Landing a 7.5 IMDb average is an impressive feat for an animated film, and much of that success is owed to Jack Black’s starring role.

Angelina Jolie plays Tigress, the most ruthless and hard-headed of the Furious Five. Jolie manages to stand out for her performance despite being surrounded by an incredible ensemble cast: Jack Black, Dustin Hoffman, Seth Rogen and Jackie Chan.

3 WORST: Hell’s Kitchen (4.7)

No, not that one. Gordon Ramsey has absolutely no involvement in this film, but we can’t help but think it might have been a blessing if he was.

This 1998 film was an incredible box office disaster, losing almost its entire budget and receiving mostly negative reviews. Even the presence of Jolie’s rising stardom couldn’t help gain the film attention. Imagine how much better it would have done if it had come out today…

2 BEST: Changeling (7.7)

At the top of Angelina Jolie’s list of best films is the Clint Eastwood directed, produced and scored film Changeling. Jolie stars as a mother looking for her missing son who is then put in a psychiatric ward after realizing the son she has been reunited with is not actually hers.

Jolie was nominated for an Academy Award for her portrayal of Christine Collins, while the film itself was praised for its presentation of the real-life Wineville Chicken Coop Murders.

1 WORST: Without Evidence (4.1)

One of Jolie’s first starring roles came when she fronted the 1996 thriller Without Evidence. The fact it was built on a real-life story without the sensationalism that often drives forward most thrillers just left the film to fall flat and end up boring.

As such, reviews were mostly negative from audiences and critics alike.
