For players who love making upgrades to their islands and purchasing rare finds at Nook’s Cranny in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, finding a good source of bells is crucial. Bells serve as the currency in Animal Crossing, and players can earn these from selling items they gather or catch, or from digging, hitting rocks, and shaking trees. With so many players turning their islands into beautiful works of art, having enough bells can be one of the most important aspects of gameplay.

Some players have noticed that selling shells collected by the beach is a good way to earn extra bells. Many of these shells will spawn multiple times on the beach, and some are worth an impressive amount. While shells are often an important crafting material, those not used for crafting can often be sold. This guide will provide a list of the current sale prices of every shell in the game so players know which ones to grab and which ones they can leave behind, as well as which shells are better suited for crafting than commerce.

Other Animal Crossing games have included other shell varieties. It is not clear yet whether New Horizons will include some of these, as none have yet been found.

Collecting Shells in Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Shells will spawn on the beaches of a player’s island periodically throughout the day. Players should check the beaches frequently for new shells, about once every hour if they are really looking for rare or specific shells. It is best to gather shells while doing other tasks around the island, like fishing or popping balloons.

Players can choose to leave shells they do not want or need on the ground, but this can limit the chances of a rare or specific shell spawning.

Selling Shells in Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Not every shell is worth selling, no matter the number of bells they can fetch. Two examples of this are the Summer Shell and the Manila Clam.

At the start of June, Summer Shells began making an appearance on Northern hemisphere islands in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. These blue shells are only available in the summer. Players may notice that they aren’t worth very much when sold.

It is not recommended to start selling these particular shells until players have had the chance to craft every possible item that requires them. As Summer Shells are seasonal, once they disappear, players will have to wait to finish the special DIY items, so they may want to prioritize crafting items with these shells first.

To get recipes that require Summer Shells, players should make sure to use their slingshot and pop all the balloons that appear over their island. The presents these balloons carry will intermittently drop these recipes.

Summer Shells can be used to craft the following recipes:

  • Shell Wand: 3 Summer Shells and 3 Star Fragments
  • Shell Wreath: 1 Summer Shell, 1 Sea Snail, 1 Sand Dollar, 1 Coral, 1 Giant Clam and 1 Cowrie
  • Shellfish Pochette: 6 Summer Shells and 2 Giant Clams
  • Starry-Sands Flooring: 3 Summer Shells and 1 Sandy Beach Flooring (crafted separately)
  • Tropical Vista: 5 Summer Shells
  • Underwater Flooring: 3 Summer Shells and 3 Coral
  • Underwater Wall: 3 Summer Shells and 5 Coral
  • Water Flooring: 6 Summer Shells

The Manila Clam is another example of a shell that is worth more as a crafting item than a bell-earner. The Manila Clam won’t appear on the beach sands and instead needs to be dug with a shovel. If there is a Manila Clam under the sand, players will see a black dot that shoots a small bit of water.

Manila Clams don’t sell for much on their own, but when made into fish bait, they can attract rare fish that sell for up to 15,000 bells. In this case, players are better off crafting with the Manila Clam than selling it. Ultimately, it’s up to the player’s unique game style whether they craft with or sell their shells.
