Upcoming indie roguelike Cult of the Lamb combines the world of Animal Crossing, and its social simulation mechanics, with a terrifying dungeon crawler experience. Nintendo’s wholesome franchise lets players manage their own virtual communities, which are populated by anthropomorphic animals. While Animal Crossing: New Horizons can be dark, Massive Monster’s Cult of the Lamb puts a horrific twist on this formula.

While massive AAA games like Elden Ring and Horizons Forbidden West usually draw a huge audience, independent titles are able to deliver smaller and more succinct experiences. Developers like Supergiant Games and Team Cherry have found massive success with titles like Bastion and Hollow Knight, even though these games were crafted by small teams without a multi-million dollar budget. The growing popularity of indie games is perhaps best demonstrated by Hades, Supergiant Games’ roguelike dungeon crawler that launched back in 2020 and won an impressive number of industry awards. Many wildly anticipated indie games will release throughout 2022, too, including the turn-based RPG Sea of Stars and the feline platforming game Stray.

Cult of the Lamb gameplay reveal, posted to YouTube by Game Informer, portrays a title that takes Animal Crossing in a much different direction. The fast-paced roguelike sees players fight through randomly-generated dungeons after being sacrificed by a dark cult. However, the world of Cult of the Lamb is also rendered in an adorably cartoonish art style and is populated by animals. A base management mechanic similar to Animal Crossing lets the player build a community of followers, and keeping them happy triggers buffs during combat. Based on its gameplay, which can be found below, Cult of the Lamb uniquely combines Animal Crossing and dungeon crawlers like Hades.

While Cult of the Lamb puts a dark twist on cartoonish animal villages, an upcoming game called Coral Island will reflect Animal Crossing in both gameplay and tone. The indie farming simulator will take players to a remote island, similar to Animal Crossing: New Horizonsand allow them to form relationships with a variety of neighbors. Like Animal CrossingCoral Island lets players customize their character and home while performing leisure activities like gardening. However, unlike Animal Crossing and Cult of the Lamb, the world of Coral Island is inhabited by humans instead of talking animals.

Massive Monsters’ Cult of the Lamb looks to form a single cohesive package by combining two wholly unique genres. The whimsical and wholesome art style of Animal Crossing seems like it would clash with a brutal roguelike brawler, but in reality the two aspects of the game complement each other well. Fans of both community builders and dungeon crawlers should keep an eye on Cult of the Lamb, which is set for a 2022 release.
