A clever Animal Crossing: New Horizons player has discovered an easy way for fellow islanders to rack up the number of Bells in their town’s coffers. The in-game currency can be used used for everything from purifying bad fortunes to buying items like a (sadly non-functional) Jet Pack from Kicks the skunk.

With the economy being a core part of the gameplay in all Animal Crossing games, maintaining a healthy supply of Bells is an essential part of any player’s virtual life. Players can gather things like fish and insects, amongst other items, and sell them for a profit at the Resident Services tent (and then Nook’s Cranny later on). Although earning Bells like this isn’t hard, it is still a time-consuming endeavor, and more expensive items can leave players looking at their wallets in concern. This has led to many players searching for ways to save their money wherever possible, which formerly included a duplication glitch removed in the 2.0 update.

Now an exploit recently documented by Reddit user Majesty1985 promises to end Bell shortages for good. The trick relies on a winning combination of the Pile of cash item being considered a Hot Item and the usage of the Bell Boom Ordinance. The Bell Boom Ordinance is an optional effect, costing 20,000 Bells to enact, and it in turn raises item prices. The Pile of cash is crafted with 3 bags of 99,000 Bells (or 297,000 Bells), and has a base selling price of 148,500 Bells. However, when it is a Hot Item, and with Bell Boom active, this price increases to 356,400 Bells, meaning it can be sold for almost a 60,000 Bell profit. By investing this profit back into ‘Pile of cash’ items, players can therefore slowly increase their overall wealth with no risk. This is unlike the more widely known Stalk Market feature, as buying Daisy Mae’s turnips in search of profit can be a risky and frustrating endeavor.

Obviously, this exploit isn’t perfect. Needing the Pile of cash to be a Hot Item means leaving its functionality mostly up to chance, as the player cannot control when it will be considered a Hot Item. Plus, there is the initial cost to consider. Even ignoring the improvements to the island required to unlock the relevant services, the exploit needs a total of 317,000 Bells for the Bell Boom Ordinance and the initial Pile of cash. On the other hand, the rewards are potentially limitless; Majesty1985 needed only “about 10 minutes to go from 300k to 3 million” Bells. With the possibility of obtaining rare seasonal items available in New Horizons‘ upcoming spring events, this could give players the opportunity they need to secure their starting capital.

Although some Animal Crossing: New Horizons players may consider exploits like this cheating, going against the spirit of a game if not the actual code, they can still help ease frustration for those players with an eye on the more expensive items. For these players, people who are highly invested in making sure their islands look their absolute best, an easy way to get the Bells required for the more ambitious projects is sure to be an interesting prospect. Whether this is an expansive landscaping endeavor or an impressive Animal Crossing build like a carnival or castle, money will be no object.
