Animal Crossing New Horizons adds a slew of fantastic new items and features to the Animal Crossing Franchise. Players can no create custom designs from their Nook Phones, dig up whole trees, and craft DIY Furniture. But maybe one of the most unexpected (and arguably unneeded) quality of life improvements added to Animal Crossing New Horizons is the addition of the magic wands. Hard to get ahold of? Definitely. Worth it? Maybe.

Animal Crossing New Horizons adds a craftable tool called the Magic Wand. These wands come in different forms and can be crafted in multiple different ways but all of them have the same ability… changing clothes instantly. First players will need to get their hands on the recipe and the elusive materials needed to craft the wand. This guide will teach players where to obtain the recipes and how to get the materials needed to craft a magic wand.

Getting the recipe for Magic Wands in Animal Crossing New Horizons

The first step in obtaining a wand is getting your hands on the recipe. This is pretty simple as the recipe can be obtained from Celeste the owl who appears in the player’s town the night the museum is built. Assuming that the reason she is there is because Blathers, the museum owner, is her brother. If you miss her the night the museum is built she will appear on your island at night randomly. Once a player talks to her she will give you the recipe for the Star Wand and hint at what the player needs to do to obtain the materials needed.

In addition to the Star Wand, players can find a second recipe for the Bamboo Wand. The recipe for the Bamboo Wand can be found in a bottle on the beach or from floating presents players can shoot down with a slingshot. Now it’s on to the hard part… collecting the materials needed to craft the wand.

Collecting Star Fragments in Animal Crossing New Horizons

The main ingredients for crafting any wand are Star Fragments which can only be obtained by making wishes on shooting stars. Shooting stars only appear at night when the sky is clear, so if there are clouds in the sky shooting stars will not appear. It is also important to note that just because the sky is clear does not mean there will be shooting stars, but if there are clouds there is no chance of shooting stars.

Also, if Celeste is in your town that means that shooting stars will appear that night. If you have already the Star Wand recipe and Celeste appears on your island players can earn more rare recipes by talking to her again.

When a meteor shower begins multiple shooting stars will appear over a period of time, and multiple meteor showers can happen in one night. Players will need to look up to the sky by pressing upwards on the right thumbstick and will need to put away their tool by pressing down on the D-pad. While looking upwards players will need to press “A” when a shooting star appears to make a wish. The player will cup their hands and bow their head and the shooting star will brightly flash and then disappear.

Players can repeat this process over and over again until there are no more shooting stars left. Each recipe calls for three Star fragments but players will probably want to stock up for future use.

You may realize that after you make a wish no star fragments appear in your inventory, and that is because star fragments appear on the island’s shoreline the morning after the meteor shower. Players will need to make their way around the island collecting all of the fallen star fragments from the beach.

Collecting Bamboo in Animal Crossing New Horizons

The Star Wand calls for three-star fragments and one large star fragment. This can be a bit tricky seeing as large star fragments are rarer than regular star fragments, and it is random which the player will receive after wishing on a star. However, the Bamboo Wand calls for six Young Spring Bamboo in place of the large star fragment. Still difficult to get a hold of, but it is definitely easier than getting a Large Star Fragment.

Bamboo can be found on mystery islands players visit by using Nook Miles Tickets. Nook Miles Tickets will need to be purchased for 2,000 Nook Miles from the Resident Services facility. This will send the player to a randomly generated deserted island with the chance of the island being a bamboo forest. A bamboo forest is an island completely covered in bamboo stalks that players can use an axe on to harvest different kinds of bamboo. The lighter green bamboo is the type you will need in order to craft the bamboo wand.

Players can also take bamboo shoots and grown stalks from the island and bring them to their own for future use. Once the player has six Young Spring Bamboo they will have enough to craft a Bamboo Wand.

Magic Wand Use in Animal Crossing New Horizons

Now that you have a wand, the magic question is what does it do? Having a magic wand allows the player to switch between eight different outfits with a wave of their hand. Players will need to craft a wardrobe to store their clothes in and select the outfits to change between in order for the wand to function properly. This may not appeal to a broad audience, but for those who wish to switch to their fishing clothes or lumberjack attire can now do so without trekking all the way back to their house.

If this does not appeal to you it is advised to save your star fragments for later. Almost all of the DIY recipes Celeste gives players require star fragments and most of them are much more useful or are at least decorative than a magic clothes changing wand.
