In an unlikely crossover, Red Dead Redemption 2 and Animal Crossing: New Horizons have been united by a clever and creative fan. At first glance, Red Dead Redemption and Animal Crossing seem like unlikely bedfellows. One is a brutal deconstruction of the Western genre, and the other is a jolly society simulator about exploring an island and making friends with its colorful inhabitants. Both games have a fishing component, but that’s pretty much where the similarities end.

The biggest strength of Animal Crossing is how much freedom of expression it gives to its users. Players can customize their character, their home, and their entire island. The game features countless trinkets and tchotchkes with which to turn their deserted island into a thriving community, and the late-game ability to terraform the island allows players to truly make their home a one-of-a-kind reflection of their own sensibilities.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

On Reddit, a user called MonkeyBurgerMan showed off their in-game home, which features an aesthetic clearly influenced by the Old West setting of Red Dead Redemption 2. Their in-game avatar is modelled after protagonist Arthur Morgan, and the wall of the house features an aspirational poster of Tahiti, the supposed island paradise to which Dutch and his gang dreamed of eventually retiring.

Oddly enough, this crossover makes sense within the story of Red Dead Redemption 2. The game, especially in its first act, is all about the gang trying to scrape together enough money to flee the outlaw life and retire to the sunny shores of Tahiti, a magical place where they can live out the rest of their days in peace and quiet, their life of crime firmly behind them. In terms of peaceful island getaways, nothing comes close to Animal Crossing: New Horizons, which puts players on a deserted island and tasks them with exploring, picking fruit, catching bugs, and otherwise enjoying the relaxing island life.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons thrives on the imagination and creativity of its users. It’s a non-violent game about making friends and enjoying the scenery of their fully customizable island haven. Likewise, though Red Dead Redemption 2 is full of violence, harsh language, and brutal shootouts between gangs and crooked lawmen, it also features vast swaths of gameplay with no violence at all. If they choose, players can explore Red Dead‘s vast open-world depiction of 1899 America and still have a wonderful time. Of course, there’s always the risk of being mauled by a bear, attacked by a gang, or accidentally falling off a cliff to one’s death. But that’s just part of the adventure, right?
