A clever Animal Crossing: New Horizons player has found a simple yet effective way to create a hidden room within a digital home. Nintendo’s social simulation title gives players the freedom to plan out and build their very own island village, complete with non-player character neighbors. Animal Crossing: New Horizons recently received a 2.0 update and the Happy Home Paradise DLC, both of which allow players to further customize their islands and interact with new Villagers.

Between the 2.0 update and the Happy Home Paradise expansion, Animal Crossing: New Horizons recently underwent some big positive changes. The free 2.0 update lets players build permanent shops for traveling vendors, giving them constant access to their wares, while brand-new shops have been opened on Harv’s Island Market. New remote islands can be visited as well, and Brewster’s café can be opened in the museum. Meanwhile, the paid Happy Home Paradise is a large expansion that introduces an abundance of new features revolving around the creation of vacation homes. The DLC also lets players remodel residents’ homes on their Animal Crossing island using a large number of new mechanics, allowing them to create a much more uniform look for their entire island.

A clever Reddit user and Animal Crossing: New Horizons architect, crescentbeing, has used partition walls in a home to create a secret back room. Partition walls, added in the Happy Home Paradise DLC and unlocked by playing through the expansion, let players divide rooms within a house. While this is typically used to make one big room into smaller parts, crescentbeing has used the new feature to make a hidden back room in Shep’s home. By making a large partition that extends across nearly the entire room, players can leave just a small gap for their Villager to slip through while hiding whatever may be contained in the secret room on the other side.

While the release of update 2.0 and the Happy Home Paradise DLC have reignited interest in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, they have also signaled the end of support for the relaxing social simulator. With the game expected to receive no additional pieces of post-launch content, fans have begun looking ahead to the franchise’s future. The next game in the Animal Crossing franchise could very likely already be in development, based on the end of support for New Horizons. The series’ latest installment gave players an unprecedented level of control over the layout of their village, and it is expected that the next game will only increase that level of control by implementing features introduced in update 2.0 and Happy Home Paradise.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons gives players a wide variety of different tools, and then gives them the freedom to use those tools however they please. The partition walls added in Happy Home Paradise are meant to divide large rooms into smaller sections, leading to creations such as open kitchens or play areas. However, crescentbeing’s creativity allowed them to create a hidden secret room in the back of a seemingly ordinary home. This ingenuity in reorganizing Shep’s home demonstrates the enduring creativity of the Animal Crossing: New Horizons fanbase.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is available on Nintendo Switch.
